Show LOSS OF THE MAGGIE Captain of the Tiber Tells How It Came About SYDNEY N B Nov 9 Captain De Lisle of tCie British rteamer Tiber which coJlTded with and sunk the Newfoundland New-foundland schooner Maggie last Friday Fri-day causing a loss of 13 lives arrived here today To a reporter for the United Associated Associ-ated Presses Captain De Lisle explained ex-plained that the accident was caused I I by the captain of tJie Moggie trying to get under the land on he soulh side of Amherst light but he misjudged the distance between the two vessels Cap ain De Lisle expressed great regret at th awful loss of life and seemed very nruuh affected He also spoke of his efforts to rescue tile unfortunates or dering the mate to man one boat and calling to another schooner also to assist as-sist in the rescue I Mate BouKnger of the Tiber in sppak ing of tihe tragedy said ng The schooner went down stern first and sank very I quickly Her huiiohss probably were open The deckload on the schooner was lumber and those 1 saved were linging to it except a 16yearold boy vho ivan clinging to a bate of hay when It got to him The captain of the schooner seemed out of his mfnd when I get to him in the I boat He jumped around in a frantic manner and talked bout tfce loss of his wife and property I werai around the spot where the schooner went down three or four times calling out so that no one might have been left and did not leave until the captain of the Maggie was satisfied there were no more to be saved I will I never forget the heartrending screams of the = women He also said as Captain De Lisle that If the Maggie had kept on her course she wotrtd have cleared tihe Tiber with room to spare Nothing has been done towards arresting Captain De LisIe |
