Show NARROW ESCAPE A Mistake Saves tie Life of a South Carolina Sheriff NEW YORK Nov 9A Sun special from Columbia S C says Yesterday morning at daybreak Sheriff Sher-iff Nance of Abbeville delivered to deputies dep-uties of Magistrate Cothran Dan lena len-a negro charged with the assassination of Thomas C Perrin and sent to jail for safe keeping The ihagistrate in his written order said he wished to have a preliminary investigation The sheriff had misgivings misgiv-ings and was ready to act when a short time afterward word was brought that 300 men had the prisoner and were going to lynch him With a spirited horse attached to a buggy the sheriff gave chase After covering 12 miles he came upon the party The prisoner was being held in the buggy The sheriff hailed the party and in the name of South Carolina Caro-lina demanded the surrender of the prisoner The driver answered What have you to do with i 1 Then the driver lashed his horse into a run The sheriffs horse was a thoroughbred not a trotter so he cut him out of the harness rode him bareback bare-back and followed the supposed lynch ers Overhauling them he again demanded de-manded the prisoner They did not hpfrt him so he drew his nistol and began to fire on the crowd The sheriffs sher-iffs horse was gun shy and interfered inter-fered with his aim The horse then threw him in the road On capturing the horse the sheriff continued th chase Coming to the forks in the road he took the one leading to the Savannah river instead of the one going go-ing to Magistrate Cothrans house Pursuing Pur-suing this for four miles he found himself him-self off the track Retracing his steps Nance reached Cothrans house and found the prisoner safe and ound The men the sheriff Had pursued were Coth rans deputies and 2 guard They mistook mis-took Cothran for the leader of the lynchers and would have killed him had he come in close range |
