Show CLEVELANDS PARDON r J IT IS EXTEXBED TO CLOOTp ROSS yn m nrn vvu r TIle Men Were Implicated > in tlC Railway Riots in California at tlc Time of the Late Great Strike p I WASHINGTON tfTov 9The president presi-dent has pardoned W H Clune Isaac Rcia end Philip Sunncod orb c a sentenced December65l8D3 6 89t to pay a fine of 1 and tobe confined in Los Angeles county jail 18 months for con spiracy the offense being committed in the railway riots at that time general throughout the country The men did not begin serving their time until af ter their sentences had been affirmed by the supreme court of the United States Unied The president wrote the following 5 in dorsement on the application These convicts have suffered more than nine months imprisonment under the sentences I am bound to assume that they were guilty of an offense j most significant in Is character nll in the commission o which they aided and encouraged an unlawful defiance of authority which threatened the most distressing consequences I am convinced con-vinced however that these men are not criminals but laboring men swept into a violation of law by first yield ing to the counsels of disorder Others besides themselves are suffering humiliation hu-miliation and deprivation on account cf their wrongdoing and I am led to be lee that the purposes of punishment so far as the effect on the prisoners is concerned have been fully accomplished accom-plished I am also convinced that the imprisonment already suffered by these prisoners has been ample warning to the thousands equally guilty though unpunished and to those who may be hereafter tempted that the laws enacted en-acted to secure peace and order must be obeyed |
