Show LEPERS ESCAPE Long Dong and Sam 100 Hail find Enough of tlic North Brother Island NEW YORK Oct 30A paper pa-per says there were only five men in the leper colony on North Brother island is-land Two of them were Chinamen I Their names were Long Dong and Sam Lao They escaped some time Wednesday Wed-nesday They were about the worst two cases but they had apparently become so reconciled to their fate that they were given much liberty Long Dong spoke English fluently When he was taken to North Brother Broth-er island he left a substantial bank account ac-count behind him in the care of a cousin cous-in who runs a laundry supply house inDo in-Do ers street The kittens he wrote to this cousin and the letters he received re-ceived In reply were addressed in English Eng-lish but the contents were wrItten in Chinese The lepers are kept in an enclosure on the south side of the island An orderly watched over them during the day at night they are left to do pretty much as they please but a nightwatch man Is employed to see that no boat gets near the island aSter nightfall When the day orderly visited the quarters at 7 a m yesterday the China men were gone Detectives searched Chinatown for them all day but no trace of their whereabouts was secured se-cured From all that could be gathered last night Long Dong arranged the job through fishermen who frequented the island in boats and had perfected his plans to gee hlmseOf and Sam Ui6 back to China They waited for a favorable opportunity to escape Long Dong had money to bring it about if possible Sam Lao was five years the senior of Long Dong and was his inferior in caste He has acted as valet to Long Dong The probability is thaLtiey landed on the Long Island shore pad are now in hiding until arrangements have been made by which they can betaken be-taken back to China I |
