Show r w ASH I1RS t FIGURES I Populist Chairman Gives Combinations of States That Will Elect Bryan = = Defeat I i I < 1s Impossible 1 CHICAGO Oct 50The following I final 1l eile i 7ir i tie POpuUst ideas ide-as t elestfont day probabilities and expectations I ex-pectations throughout country were given tonight to ghO United Associated Presses by Chairman Washburn of the Chicago headquarters In view of the fact that the people are anxious to know what combinations of states are liable to win I have I grouped together several any group of which is liable to be the correct one 01 election day It conceded that the Democratic gold defection will be offset by the Silver Republicans which leaves the normal conditions of both parties the same Then add to the r Democratic vote the 2000000 of Populist Popu-list votes and ifis apparent that Bryan must win Fortunately the Populist vote is largest in the states where it Is most needed and whIle Bryan cannot win without it he Is sure to win with i and will get the full Populist vote AN ANALYSIS In analyzing the vpte of the country I have grouped as Bryan states the agricultural and mining states where the gold Democratic defection and floating vote is smallest and where the success of that ticket depends on the farmers who have been educated on the sliver question through schoolhouse I and alliance meetings and who would feel insulted If offered a price for their vote or were coerced in any manner Therefore it is conceded that the 31 state weft of the Mississippi and south oftheOhio river representing 242 electoral elect-oral votes or 18 more than needed are the states which Bryan is most likely to carry and the states which are comparatively the paratively sure for McKinley are six New England states together with New Jersey and Pennsylvania representing repre-senting 81 electoral votes The doubtful doubt-ful states are the middle western including in-cluding Illinois Indiana Michigan Ohio and Wisconsin together with New York making 124 electoral votes It is apparent to any political student that while Bryan can be elected by half a I dozen different combinations tht on the other hand McKinley must carry every eastern state togetherwith every one of the central western doubtful states in order to win ONE IN SIX Therefore he has one chance where I Bryan a six While Bryan can win without the doubtful states his chances s hs cance I for carrying them are better than Mc Kinleys and should he get them all lit would prove to be a veritable landslide land-slide Of the 31 Bryan states the most doubtful are Iowa Kentucky Del ware and Maryland We can lose Iowa and Delaware or Kentucky and Delaware Dela-ware or Maryland and Delaware and still win without carrying a single doubtful state In the middle west We wes can give McKinley all of the eastern and middle western doubtful states together with Iowa or Kentucky or Maryland and Delaware and then win SURPRISES LOOKED FOR Of the doubtful states Ohio is most likely to furnish the greatest surprise sur-prise The silver Republican vote will be enormous Our most conservative reports of Illinois Indiana and Michigan Mich-igan give these three states to Bryan Now concede the other three doubtful states New York Ohio and Wisconsin and we can afford to lose Kentucky Wyoming Maryland Delaware Nebraska Ne-braska North Dakota Oregon West Virginia Minnesota and Iowa and still win Again we can carry Indiana and Michigan which are sure for Bryan and lose Illinois Ohio New York and Wisconsin and in addition to all this give them Kentucky Maryland pela ware North Dakota West Virginia and Iowa and all the eastern states and we still win There are several other combinations which include states naturally for Bryan and which in a like manner would enable him to win winIn In Illinois Bryan will carry the state outside of Chicago by between SOOOO and 40000 majority The uncertainty un-certainty is Chicago with its 100000 unplaced votes I Bryan carries this city he will carry the state and no combination can beat him in the rest of the states THE FLOATING VOTE In former years the floating vote could be bought but there were only one or two pivotal states While it Is possible to buy the floating vote of a single state it Is not possible to buy up the whole nation Then again informer in-former years the floating vote was indifferent in-different to the results This year every man has strong convictions and will certainly vote them in the booth whether he takes any money or not Possession is nine points of the law Bryan has already enough states to win with more than an equal chance In the doubtful states and only needs president to hold his own He will be our next |
