Show MKINLEY IS BEATEN NOV Unqualified Opinion of the Populist Popu-list National Secretary REPUBLICANS KNOW IT 1I1IHG CIlIMi SIMPLY IOIl EFFECT EF-FECT What They Claim < o Have Is Only Vliat They Hope to Get liy anil Through tlic Influence of Mr Hanna and llli Harrcl Uryan Moxcmmt AKKnminK1 tIle Proportions Propor-tions of a Landslide WASHINGTON Oct Secretary Edgerton of the Populist national committee com-mittee yesterday gave out his first formal interview his subject being the claims made by the Republican committees a com-mittees hi regard to the election of Mc IClnlcy which he characterized as preposterous and made with the Idea of fraud in all the doubtful states MoKInley he said on a fair vote Is beaten now by an overwhelming majority The Republicans realize this Yet in the face of this they mak claims of an enormous majority for McKinley but give no figures to back up their claims They depend I upon outright purchase of electors and election boards to furnish the majorities major-ities they are predicting I I WITHOUT FOUNDATION To show how utterly without foundation are the predictions made by Mr Apsley Mr Grosvenor and others I need only to cite a few states They claim California California went for Cleveland in 92 and for the Democratic candidate for governor in 94 This was done without any assistance from the Populists who have 50000 votes in that state This year Populists and democrats have fused In addition to the Populist vote there is a large free silver Republican vote which will be cast for Bryan In California The Republicans of that state for several years in state conventions declared for free silver at 1G to 1 The Republican defection in silver is led by such men as Jets D Grant and others A FOOLISH CLAIM They claim Nebraska A fusion between be-tween the Populists and Democrats elected a governor of Nebraska In 94 This year there is complete fusion in that state and in addition to this free silver Republicans by the thousands all over Nebraska declare they will r vote for Bryan A great many silver clubs are composed of nothing but Republicans Re-publicans This is notably true In the city of Omaha where there is such a club with a membership of a thousand thou-sand Added to this still isMr Bryans immense pppUlarlty inhis own state CafiforniaTand Nebraska areas safe for Bryan as Mississippi Why do they make these clalms Simply because they are depending not on any evIdence which they now have of votes for McKinley but on what they think Hannas immense campaign fund may doA do-A LANDSLIDE 1 believe that Bryan will be triumphantly tri-umphantly elected This movement Is assuming the proportions of a landslide land-slide and all the money that Mark liaiini can thro into the campaign I will not stop it The silent vote is with us Republican fanners by the thousand thou-sand all through the central and far west are coming to us The Populists all through those sections are standing by Bryan to a man The gold Democratic Demo-cratic defection is confined to a few I socalled leaders and will not seriously seri-ously affect the result Bryan will carry the entire central west with the possible exception of Ohio and Wisconsin Wis-consin by 1 an unprecedented majority |
