Show HARRISON IS OUT TUB EXrHESraECNT STIRRING CP SORTInX LVDIASA o Is Received IT Large Crowds Everywhere Ev-erywhere but the Inevitable C1ii > cr For Bryant Taken the Edge Off of isis Pleasure FORT WAYNE Ind Oct 30Ex President Harrison closed his first day of campaigning in northern Indiana in Fort Wayne tonight The expresident and his party will leave this city In the morning for a tour of the counties northwest of here The platform I from which Mr Harrison spoke here tonight broke down under the great crowd upon it and precipitated the expresident to the ground Much confusion ensued but no one was injured Eugene V Debs spoke to large assem binges hero tonight about SUOO people hearing him At Winchester where nothing of very great magnitude had been expected General Gen-eral Harrison encountered one of the greatest demonstrations of the day The people began to pour In early in the morn ing and by the time the big parade started the managers of the demonstration estimated esti-mated that from 20000 to 230CO people were on the around On the way to Portland the party was entertained by the Goldbug Glee club of Winchester A mometary stop was made at Ridgeville where General Harrison Harri-son bowed his acknowledgements to several sev-eral hundred people who had gathered at the station N Portland was scheduled for the longest stop of the day and the event was made a general rally for all that section A tent holding 8000 people had been provided for the meeting but not onethird of the crowd could gtt into it A hundred young men with Bryan badges went to the station sta-tion to close in behind the train and cheer for Bryan when Mr Harrison appeared ap-peared They let go a few cheers about ten minutes before the train arrived and the multitude closed in upon them with a rush of such momentum that thre or four of them fainted They were carried from the crowd and no Interruption of the proceedings was attempted A burst of tremendous cheering and waving of hats started when General HarI Har-I rfson appeared and waved along the crowd as far sal could be seen up the street The multitude moved slowly after the carriage I car-riage as It movffd out to the open field j t here the tent was pitched and people were found packed for 50 yards around 1U I Finally General Harrison and party succeeded suc-ceeded in reaching the stand and he was introduced by the county chairman J C 11 McAdams General Harrison spoke at some length and with great earnestness taking up in turn each of the more important im-portant Issues of the campaign and dls > cussing them Brief speeches were made at Geneva and Berne where General Harrison talked briefly to several hundred It was dark by the time Coulhour was reached A crowd of about 4CCO people were gathered about the station where a stand had been erected General Harrison was given a warm reception though a number ot cheers for Bryan were heard In his speech General Harrison went over the history of the Republican party In making mak-ing good the promises of the government in resuming specie payments and declared that the Democratic party had faced completely com-pletely about on the money question In four years quoting the platform of 1S93 and recent speeches of Bryan In support of the assertion The principal point of his speech however was In dealing with the question of fusion He told his old Democratic friends of Adams county that they could not vote the straight ticket this time if they wanted to For whom do you expect to vote he asked For Bryan and Sewall You cannot do it If you should carry Indiana five of your electoral votes would go for Thomas Watson Wat-son of Georgia who is not a Democrat and does not claim to be a Democrat They have put five POpulists upon your electoral ticket and if you vote it two thirds of your vote goes to Bryan and Sewall of your ticket and one third of It goes to Bryan and Watson the Populist tiomlnee An If Thomas Watson should hold the balance of power In the electoral college you would have them as Watson for vicepresident or nobody You who have been taking the straight thing for all these yeas cannot get the straight thing this year by voting the Democratic ticket Applause But you can vote a straight Republican ticket and thereby uphold up-hold many of the principles for which Jackson and Jefferson stood principles that are now attacked by Mr Bryan and the Chicago platform The train was considerably behind time and a fast run was made to Fort Wayne which was reached at 615 only a few minutes late Here General Harrison rested quietly in his car until 630 oclock when the Republicans of Allen county gave one of the biggest demonstrations that have ever been known A night parade that required a couple of hours in passing was given followed by a speech of nearly an hours length by General Harrison in a circus tent that had been procured for the occasion |
