Show ALTGELDS aiOHiAIj COURAGE Judge King comes back from the east where he has been speaking in behalf be-half of Mr Bryan and free silver looking look-ing wellbut feeling a little tired He 1 comes bacjc with an enhanced admiration admira-tion for Governor Altgeld who he says is a truly great man The judge tells of an incident I that occurred while he was talking with Governor Altgeld In the southern part of the state great effQrts are being made to prejudice the voters against the governor because he pardoned the Haymarket Anarchists A gentleman connected with the campaign came in and told the governor what was going on and requested that he give him the petition wiih over eighty thousand signatures sig-natures of people of all parties and from all over the state on it asking that the Ana ch late be pardoned He said he deared to have it printed with the J tl1 names of some forty or fifty leading Republicans of the state who had signed it and to use it as a campaign document Without any hesitation Governor Altgeld replied No I cannot let you have it for any suh purposs I pardoned chose men because of my conviction that it was right and my duty to do so And now if anyone is assailing me because I did and trying to injure me politically I will not seek protection behind the names upon that petition I but dud my duty and that is enough It was truly a great display of moral courage equal to the moral courage of Mr Cleveland when he said Tell the truth |
