Demo I crnlle Legislature Urges Silver I Republicans to Do Their Duty In This Mutter i Never before In the history of thjs j city has there been such a meeting as that held in the theater last evening If there was one person there there were 2500 The house was packed from top to bottom and the stage held everyone every-one that could get a place The aisles I were full of standing men and women wo-men i It was an enthusiastic gathering every speaker being applauded to the echo If other meetings held in Utah are I of the same class and It Is said they V 4jkS 1 4 f 10 TI no jr TT n KING are then this fair young commonwealth common-wealth will give Bryan a majority which will astonish even the most sanguine san-guine The crowd was an orderly one too Of course every sentiment was applauded ap-plauded but there was nothing savorIng savor-Ing of hoodlumism In the meeting Almost Al-most every one there was a voter SoC So-C ger were the people to get to listen to the speakers that ladies climbed the stairs to the upper galleries and eat w > here the gods usually rest and eat peanuts Oh it was a great event The band is to be congratulated It entered into the spirit of the occasion and played nothing but tunes of a patriotic pat-riotic nature And whenever one of the old standbs was begun people came to the rescue and applauded to 4 the echo Held is to be commended for his wisdom in selecting something out of the ordinary Party lines vanished last evening Republicans Re-publicans and Democrats alike forgot 1 the principles of tariff and tariff reform re-form and together cheered the speakers utterances The ladles were especially active If their conduct last evening Is indicative of their intentions at the polls may some one have mercy on McKinley and JHolbrook Judge King made a splendid effort He demonstrated what has been contended con-tended by this paper so many times that he is so far superior to the man he is running against in ability that a comparison dignifies the Republican candidate The audience saw the point too and the impression Judge King made will be of lasting good to him In this city His EDcech was a vote setter Judge Powers remarks were as good as usual His speech was a gem He distanced himself as it were Thc decorations were simple but impressive im-pressive and appropriate Over the stage hung the Democratic emblem the gold and silver daisy 16 to 1 while around the boxes were festooned flags with the mottoes Silver and Gold a picture of the next president leaned up against the speakers desk The audience displayed its patrlotirtn at the start when the band plpyed a medley of patriotic airs The Star Spangled Banner Red White and Blue Marching Through Georgia and the balance provoked great ap plause Judge Powers and Hon R X Baskln i came in as the band ceased and were given an ovation of several minutes i duration 1 CHAIRMAN BURTON i Chairman Burton of the Democrat i F executive state committee opened the 1 L 4 meeting He said Ladies and Gen J j tlemen Before proceeding I want tot to-t announce that on Monday next at the I I Lyceum theatre Judge Powers will at I i f 2 oclock address the ladles of this city on the Issues of the day r It is proper for me to say at this time J that reports from all the counties In this state point to a great victory In Utah We feel certain that our great j 1 I J standardbear William J Bryan applause will have a majority of at least 30000 and it may reach 40000 Applause We feel certain that our eloquent and deserving candidate for congress Hon W H King will receive re-ceive at least 5000 majority and probably prob-ably 8000 Applause We feel certain that outside of Salt Lake county we will elct a majority of the next legislature legis-lature and we ask you in this county Ito I I-to increase that majority applause and make sure of the election of a real and true friend of silver to the senate of the United States Applause Ap-plause i Mr Burton then introduced Hon R N Baskin as chairman of the meeting meet-ing HON Ri Ni BASKIN Judge Baskln sAid that by request he desired to make a few remarks He related an anecdote of a man who came into his office and propounded three conundrums The first was Why is Mi Bryan like a dentist and the answer Because he Is a good drawer The second was Why is Mr Bryan like a buccaro the reply being Because he is cinching the goldbugs The last one is Why is McKinley like a cooper Because he is dependent upon a barrel Applause Ap-plause Judge Baskin said that the last one would form a topic for a few remarks It Is patent that the opposition opposi-tion are dependent upon the barrel to a great extent The big corporations are contributing their support by their I money and not alone with cash but I they are coercing their employees into voting for the gold standard They have threatened them with discharge if they do not vote as they are told When we consider this action the patriotic pa-triotic man naturally stops to think I believe that naturally our people are goodthat our Institutions are good but when we consider that our elections may be controlled by money when we find that men can be coerced I ask you what is left of our institutions that we should revere v Judge Baskin referred to the address of Senator Brown on the evening previous pre-vious which he designated as one replete with sophistries Mr Brown declared that the tariff was the first issue and silver the secord He alleged that free trade was the cause of all the ills the country was suffering from fromow Now as a matter of fact since the war we have had a protective tariff The McKinley tariff was the highest of all and on that Issue Mr Harrison was rebuked by the voters of the nation na-tion Then came the Wilson bill which was next in order of high duty and this was not a Democratic measure because a Republican senate amended I It and destroyed the original Intent By what show of reason can any man say that tariff is the cause of this depression I de-pression It is attributable alone to the demonetization of silver In 1873 Judge Baskln then devoted a few I moments in explanation of the principles i prin-ciples of tariff and made the following i assertion If the Republicans should say to me Give us a tariff law and we I will give you silver 1 wild FlY o ahead with your tariff bill and make your duty as high as you please Because Be-cause we can amend an unjust tariff bill and when silver is remonetized no power on earth can again strike it down Applause Mr Cleveland has differed from his party and hag been left desolate to seek refuge in the arms of the Little Napoleon Applause At this point Judge King entered and was given cn ovation When the applause ceased Judge Baskin urged the election of Judge King and a Democratic Dem-ocratic legislature Bryans fight will be only just begun be-gun at his election All the power of the gold element will be brought to break down his adtrnistratlor Judge Baskin then introduced HON W H KING Judge King was greeted with one of the greatest demonstrations which the Salt Lake theatre ever witnessed Every hat was in the air and every voice was raised It was a long five minutes ere he could speak When quiet was restored Judge King I Said he brought good news from the t east that the superb and matchless man was going from victory to victory and that when the ballots were counted William J Bryan will have been elected president of the United I States Applause I i Wherever he goes party lines are t vanished and men regardless of poll j i tics are rallying to the standard of honest money Applause i I Wjjliam J Bryan is standing for the j I money of the constitution for the I money which will assist the masses i i I am willing to concede much to the I old Republican party and the grand men who have made it up but parties ofttimes become corrupt and then it is I that new ones spring up from the peo iple Parties are not destined to be despots but servants of the people Shall we not stand by these men who are trying to enhance the principles of honesty In this great state of Utah for 20 years we have sounded the alarm for silver That great man Judge Good win has been fighting for it nobly and earnestly We have declared for It In our party platforms We have been honest in these party resolutions But now we find men who tell us that silver sil-ver is a debased money and that we must stand until some other nations come to our assistance and help relieve re-lieve us Such men have no place In the Democratic Demo-cratic party To those rho believe in silver I say why not cross the Rubicon Rubi-con Why not cut the Gordlan knot If William J Bryan represents your best views why not support him nationally na-tionally and locally Applause Read the utterances of Reed Inger I sol and a host of others and see if you can find anything in favor of silver sil-ver Mr McKinley says cheap money makes a cheap man and that silver Is cheap Mr Ingersoll who gets 1000 per night for speaking against silver was 1 several years ago in favor of it But now with other he Is aping England i Three years ago when a Democrat said a word in favor of anything I English we were accused of being English Does the Republican party believe In bimetallism You know there are two kinds of bimetallism bimeaalllsm and by and by metalllsm applause and laughter The Democrats say that seventy millions of people can direct their own financial policy This question ques-tion is one of financial liberty CLEVELAND A REPUBLICAN Oh you who have condemned Cleveland Cleve-land Condemn him as you will He is a Republican He is no longer a Democrat Demo-crat but with McKinley walks arm in arm like two cherubs to Mark Hannis golden altar and bows down while Mark says a benediction How blessed lit is for brethren to dwell together in unity Palmer and Buckner aids to the Mc Kinley crowd are going up and down the land saying they dont expect to be elected butare there for the purpose of upholding the arms of McKinley These are the men that are going round the country as Democrats wolves In sheeps clothing deceiving IQe people In the Republican party there is no hope for financial reform There is nothing in the conduct of foreign nations na-tions to indicate a desire io return to the bimetallic system The monetary conference at Brussels clearly showed that The English representative on the first day of the conference said England was satisfied with her present gold standard and wanted no change RotlhscMld on the last day of the session ses-sion and he was received with great obeisance said It was absolutely impossible impos-sible for England to change her financial finan-cial policy Goshen the secretary of the treasury of England said England had a splendid splen-did financial policy and even Gladstone declared it was too much to expect England to sacrifice herself and her in I t rests for the world owes England ten I billions of dollars in gold and she Is determined to have her interest on that i vast sum wrung thougiii it be frlJm the j sweat of American manhood i Our foreign commerce is only 5 per i cent of our total trade and cuts but a I I small figure with us and it is clear we i can hope for nothing from foreign nations t na-tions If you are for bimetallism you i must cut loose from the McKinley parr par-r ty and throw in your lot with Bryan I You have got to be for freedom in fin i anrial policy and independence of the I American nation or you have to be I f for serfdom and ttoalldom of our fair 1 countrytosforedgn nations Either one I or the other Tariff is a very secondary I Issue We have to raise a vast revenue rev-enue to conduct the government and this necessitates a high tariff To raise that revenue of 500000000 annually a tariff is necessary and the Democrats when Bryan is elected and he Will be elected will not make that tariff such as to work to the benefit of a small section sec-tion of the country at the expense of I tine rest Economists and philosophers from Aristotle down have agreed that bimetallism bimet-allism Is the correct theory Gold to the miser has intrinsic value but Intrinsic In-trinsic value is a relative term and can be legislated into or out of any of the money metals If this government would strike down I gold by legislation and if other nations would hurl their shafts at it for twenty years It would go down until the gold bugs of today would be calling it the II cheap and debased metal They would say it was a shame to coin gold and compel people to take It in satisfaction of the debts owing them Germany once demonetized gold so did Holland and Austria and for years were on a silver basis and these nations na-tions were never so prosperous as then Gold was demonetized then because conditions were such that it enabled the financiers to control the money market and control and debase mankind man-kind as a natural sequence In this way they have the control of the world and that is wdiy Rouhschlld and his fellows fel-lows favor thegold single standard and the Republican party of the east at least L > and for this today Deprive the people of money and you I deprive them of the means of advancement advance-ment you deprive them of civilization itself History shows that In all ages I I the times of prosperity were when money was plewttful and then the financiers fin-anciers schemed to demonetize one ort or-t e ether of the metals so that they could control the actions lives and liberties lib-erties of the people The speaker referred re-ferred to ancient Rome which in the zenith of Its power had plenty or irite talllc money In circulation and when she decayed and fell the circulating medium was ac a low ebb Depriving the people of their money is the greatest injury that can be done a people War with its blighting influence in-fluence will pass and the fields and orchards will again smile on the husbandman hus-bandman and pro > erlty return but when > ou deprive people of their money it brings a blight on the land which never passes it fills the hearts of the people with bitterness and In their despair they will risa and fling the tyrant from his throne Great ap Dlauso They call us anarchists but the gold bugs are the real anarchists they have scuttled the tanks and are letting the money run out and when we Intst on seeing how big a hole Is in the tanks bottom they call us anarchists But we have got the tanks and will insist on an examination whether they like It or not We want to stop the leak and let the money rise in the tanks and the prices of your products and your labor will also rise Lincoln sent a message to the miners of the weii to dig out the gold and silver from the mountains and we shall I be the treasuryhouse of the world That was tire imomrtal Lineolns idea But the statemen of today say let the silver stay in the mountains we dont I want It It Is a mere commodity it has no intrinsic value You cant legislate I intrinsic value The fathers of the republic recognized silver money at a money of ultimate redemption and this country can maintain main-tain the parity of the metals Mr King then showed the fallacy of the argument that America would be the dumping ground of the silver of the world This country produces 73 per cent of all the silver of the world and if it all came here it would be only 458 Del capita We find amongst our Republican friends no word of condemnation condem-nation for the stupendous crime of 1873 Silver was demonetized at the Instance Continued on Page C > 1 1 THE GREATEST OF ALL g2 Continued from pact LI of the financiers and Shyiocks at England Eng-land who at the same time had fastened fasten-ed the gold standard on the people of Englan There are other issues In this campaign cam-paign but the financial question towers above them all Mr Palmer says wen we-n 111 never have silver as a money We may like a dog bay the silvery moon and that is all the good he says it will do us but the day will come when Mr Palmer and his followers will be the political wlerlerwurst for those who he sayy are baying the silvery moon APDlause If we dont win this time the American Ameri-can people will rise up and avenge the crime of 1S73 and restore the monetary system of the constitution Pardon me for speaking on personal matters Mr Holbrook is one of Gods noblemen but he is not right on the sliver question ques-tion Still if you think he can do more than I for this cause for the liberty of the people then send him to congress con-gress and let me stay at home Mr King then referred to Bryan as the Joshua of the land and appealed to all to uphold his hands till his work was done and our childrens children will rise up and bless us Judge King closed his address amid a storm of applause cheers and waving of hats HON O W POWERS When Judge Powers stepped forward it was several minutes before he could proceed the applause was so great He started out by reading the telegram of Chairman Jones of the national committee com-mittee predicting a sure ytotory for Bryan which Is given elsewhere in this issue and which occasioned further applause The judge then told a little about the Intensity of the struggle In Illinois and the middle states where wealth and power were arrayed against the people and that the latter were determined to have their right to rule Some of the arguments used in the past against silver was that overproduction overpro-duction was the cause of low onces too much wool grew on the backs of the sheep the farmers worked too hard and produced toomuch wheat and corn and the cotton planters too much cotton cot-ton and we were made poor through having too much wealth Money is not wealth it merely represents wealth I the argument Is right that by pro ducinir too much wealth we have become be-come poor then we are all wrong in teaching our children to be Industrious We should Inculcate on tem the necessity ne-cessity of being Idle and lazy for fear they become poor by producing too much wealth Settler should seek the and worst and most unproductive lands we should teach our children that the highest type of man is the savage who crawls out of his cave and kills d snake for breakfast My friends this is the only conclusion conclu-sion such reasoning can bring us Uj but I say fe is folly to say that overproduction over-production is the cause of our troubles ine factories and the granaries are full but people are hungry and ragged because tney havenot the money with which to buy what they need therefore there-fore we want more money I has become so that money is more valuable to the banker locked up in his yaults than out among the people We ought to be a nation of lenders Instead of a nation of borrowers Men in abject poverty itt l New York stand on the street corners and proclaim pro-claim about the fear of a flood of cheap money men who havent got a dollar and didnt know where to get one When I heard this talk about a flood of money I told them to give itt it-t liicir ves or send i to bait Lake and I even offered to pay the freight on it These people who have never been in Europe and never expect togo to-go to Europe are greatly worked up lest Chauncey Depew when he goes to see the Prince of Wales will have some difficulty in changing his American dollars for English sovereigns They are afraid that when some no account marries an American heiress he will have to take her dowry in 50cent dollars lars Too bad Isnt i The arrogance of the money power in this struggle is wonderful and appalling ap-palling and their denunciation of what the plutocrats call the common people is exceedingly bitter They tell us that it is for the benefit of the labpringman that the capitalist wants gold standard Capital loves labor so that it cannot bear the thought of paying the laboringman in 53cent dollars I suggested to some capitalists capital-ists that i they loved the laborer as they professed it would be a good plan to pay him 2 Instead of 1 These Shylocks are dishonest in this they are dishonest when they say it is for the purpose of having a high tariff on pumpkins and other things that they are pouring their millions into Mark Hannas campaign fund CANT TRUST THE REPUBLICANS Turning to local matters the judge asked if Republicans could do their full duty to the silver cause by electing elect-ing Holbrook as congressman The Republican party as at present constituted con-stituted could not be trusted with safety I was like the dog which the two tramps found guarding the kitchen door One tramp told the other to go in and ask for something to eat but there stood the dog Go on says the other he wont bite hes wagging wag-ging his tail Yes was the reply hes wagging his tail but hes growling growl-ing with his mouth and I dont know which to believe The Republicans here are wagging waggng the tail while the Republicans in the east are growling Can you tell which to believe asked the speaker I is for selfinterest that the corporations cor-porations the wealth the power the noteshavers the pawn brokers and all human birds of prey which fatten on the necessities of the people are I allied on one side and the common people on thet other for selfprotection SERFS OR FREEMEN The issue in this campaign is whether seventy millions of people shall be made serfs and we have a republic in name only or whether we shall be free Why do they call us anarchists Because we have declared for the money of the constitution because we have had the temerity to criticise the supreme court the creator the people criticised its creature Any American citizen has the right to criticise any American institution They are greatly great-ly wrought up over it and John M Palmer says he would rather live under un-der a monarchy than the principles of the Chicago platform No man who under any circumstances declares he would submit to a monarchy in this land should receive a single vote The best blood of the world was spilled to found this republic and Its free Institutions tutions the like of which were never possessed by man before Yet Palmer declares he prefers a monarchy and he is not alone In this Judge Powers then read an extract from Bishop Worthingtons sermon where he says it Is overeducation of the farmers and the people that have brought about present conditions said the is the The fact Judge people peo-ple are being educated so that the money changer can no longer deceive them He who attacks the free schools the glory of this land is worthy to be called an Anarchist Applause The reason the farmers sons have left the farm is that they have seen their fathers and mothers bowed down with toll and seen the fruits of their toll stolen from them and hoarded in the coffers of the usurers That is why they have left the farms and gone Into the cities to r to better their condition f Lauterbach of New York has said the people will riot abide tiy the decision decis-ion of the people If Bryan is elected WHO ARE THE ANARCHISTS s Whoare the W Anarchists A Chicago < banker says If the Bryanites win the standing army and loyal workingmen must arise and resist resist Wl are the Anarchists D 1C Henderson of Delaware has declared that 4000000 armed men who will bring In Mr Bryan and his cohorts a prisoners of war as they did Jefferson Davis dl eferson Who are the Anarchists Cries of thE goldbugs Arthur Brown and Mark Hanna The Republican party Is gone and the plutocrats have stolen the mantle mante of the founders to wrap themselves in I appeal to KU Republicans to vote for Bryan and the Democratic ticket When Bryan Is elected and he will he great cheering and he has taken his seat the battle will be transferred from the platform to the halls of con gress You want a man there who will present your case as you want i presented You want a man like King tremendous cheering who will stand for silver first silver last and silver all the time What would Holbrook do In the heat of debate Cries of noth ing Had the Democratic party de cared for a gold standard I should have deserted It I point to Michigan where Demo crats have gone for silver and nomin ated a Republican I point to Minne sota aye I point to Utah where a Republican a Populist and a Democrat were nominated as electors without exacting a promise The Democrats have been bold The national convention did not ask Pier pont Morgan for advice I turned to ward the wall the pictures of those who are against the It people I again be came the party of Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence Declaraton I be came the party of Andrew Jackson who fought the money power Jakon power I inated William J Bryan the sterling young leader sterlng The opposition began a bitter fight biter tght against him They started to laugh and he made them fear He has planted silvers banner against the very citadel er ciadeJ of the enemy I ask you why you should give aid and comfort to the enemy by voting even for Geddes and Christopherson Why should you send Harker and Tay lor to the legislature Laughter Do you want to mingle a pure Bryan bal lot with those of the McKinleyites simply to secure the control of the state While we expect to dept Bryan we fear that the gold men may capture the next house We want to defeat that Republicans who vote for Bryan your place is with us The line Is shadowy You cry harmony when there Is none Mark an X up by the rooster and let It go at that Change your politics once In a while and see i you will not be benefited Why you Republicans I should think when you see Cleveland Carlisle and Palmer walk into the Republican Re-publican party and Teller into the Democratic party YU would see at once there was something wrong I fear for this republic If a gold standard is saddled on this people I fear that some day some leader will rise who will rouse the instincts of wi people and serious results may follow folow But I have confidence In the future this time and know that we will win I wish all women could vote Because Mark Hanna had he money in piles as high as the Wasatch range could not buy the vote of the women of America Judge Powers advised all women to vote He urged all to hang out the flag today to rebuke the party which would make of it a partisan emblem Hang out the flag and show the people we believe in i Let us stand together Why you Independents you are not Republicans you are Democrats You are all wool and a yard wide Laughter All Al you want is a change of trade mark No not Mark Hanna Laughter Get in line with us and we will all be happy Why down in Wall street tonight the money changers sit at the Bel shazzars feast with their teeth chat tering as they read the handwriting on the wall and realize that Bryan Is elected The vast audience fairly shook the house as Judge Powers concluded and Judge Baskin called for three cheers for Hon W H King which were dispersed given with a will and the assembly |
