os week review of trade will say tomorrow Signs of improvement are the more satisfactory because neither accompanied accom-panied or apparently produced by a speculative craze Dealings in stocks cotton and wheat are not diverting all the interest and capital from productive pro-ductive industries and legitimate trade though these products are all a shade strong But railroad earnings bank clearings anu industrial indications indica-tions are more encouraging this w ek I i a remarkable feature that the lifting lift-ing this year begins at the bottom so to spea raw materials are raised before be-fore there is any larger demand for their finished products a thing not often done with success So far there is no answering in case of demand or in prices for manufactured manufac-tured products and on the whole the range is slightly lower than a week ago agoRaw cotton has been hoisted until a stronger market for goods resulted with some advances in prices The tone of the dry goods market has been decidedly ire ar although i does not appear that retail distribution has correspondingly Increased But stocks of retail dealers are light and when they feel that prices are bound to rise the demand may grow rapidly In the woolen business cancellations in some lines have been startling In magnitude many mills which supposed their whJe product soM finding themselves them-selves in great need of customers This seems to be mainly in low grade goods inferior quality being their common complaint but delays through strikes alo play a part while offers of cheap foreign goods are not to be overlooked I large orders have been taken Qpite ben uy foreign agencies for finer worsteds and woolens and all the way from the poorest shoddy to the best goods the competition will doubtless be sharp for more than one reason Sales of wool for the week have been quite large 5829800 pounds against 4078200 lat ea partly because a quantity held for loau was forced to sale But sales in four week have been 19546200 pounds against 17919000 last year and 21133400 in 1892 Corn is a cent lower while pork is 75c per barrel and lard and hogs 15c per hundred pounds higher The failures this week have been 234 in the United States against 233 last year and 42 in Canada against 30 last year but the recent increase indicates unsoundness past rather than recent conditions of WALL STREET New York March
