Show SQUATTERS MUST GO Interior Department Is Hot After Them It Appears Washington March 29Agent J A Smith ot tho Yankton reservation in South Dakota telegraphed tho Interior department that a largo number of settlers set-tlers have squatted on the reservation and that they have been ordered off but the order has not been enforced Later he sent the following dispatch The state of South Dakota Is taking steps to appropriate a large part of this land for school purposes in violation of + I t o > < j < l the treaty between the government and the Indians This the Indians protest aguiiist and I concur Mo action has yet been taken on either of theso dispatches Secretary Smith said tonight that law and order roust be enforced en-forced at tho reservation at all hazards and that all assistance found necessary for tho protection of the agency and the Indians would be given by the department depart-ment The land which the state Is seeking to legislate to Its own use is tho most desirable desir-able on the reservation and the department depart-ment will take prompt step to secure the defeat of the states plan The reservation will soon be opened to settlement and proclamation declaring it subject to entry en-try is now pending the action of the president |
