Show CYCLING AS A CURE WHEELING THEI BEST 3EEDICIXE FOR AILING WOMEN A Brooklyn Doctor Who Prescribes Liberal Doses ot Bicycling With Excellent Results and Who Says Women Sonldi Wear Bloomers and Ride Mens Wheels Dr W C Ijatimer of Brooklyn read avery a-very interesting letter before the New York State Homeopathic Medical society recently on The Bicycle In Its Relatloi to Diseases of Women He says Nearly two years ago I had my attention atten-tion called to this subject by the marktu benefit derived from the use of a white by a patient suffering from anaemia It was so marked that 1 could not resist the temptation to make sonic investigation regarding its use in that and other diseases dis-eases feeling that if one more mean of aiding suffering women was at our command wo should lean when and whore to use it 1 found at the outset I was in a position analogous to the lat Elder Eddy of Springrvhle this state when asked by his congregation to preach against Odd Fellowisrn Be could lean little or nothing about it outside the order so he joined it and then advise all his friends to ao likewise I also founu that to learn all the advantages and dis advantages of cycling it was necessary to become a rider and proceeded at once to learn the art My observations have included in-cluded cases of dymenorrhea men9rr hagia delayed and scanty menstruation anaeniTa dyspepsia and one case of relaxed re-laxed patella and strained knee tendons In dymenorrhea when spasmodic or due to weakened muscles ot the pelvic floor singly or combined it has proved a boon beyond value accomplishing in ont case in six weeks what carefully selected remedies rest etc had failed to do in eighteen months In menorrhagia I am unable to make positive statements out should not hesitate to recommend thf wheels use ni c es due to weakness or malnutrition In delayed and scanty menstruation win due to weakness it is beneficial in i oportion to the improvement im-provement in the gf ral conditions In those cases we aoni dines meet which seem almost hereditary it ha no effect either way In anam x and dyspepsia it is a boon beyond valuo when properly used and a cured wiien a used In these cases the rides nst be shore preferably in the morning i eeeded by a glass of milk or light lunch > lowed by a cool sponge bath and a bi r rubbing and a short rest abut onehan hour bt fore breakfast which may consist ol eggs or a chop rolls or stale bread mills cocoa or when these disagree moderately moder-ately strong coffee breakfast to be fol lowed by a short rest when the occupa tion will allow After a brief time twc to four weeks a short ride may be taken during the afternoon returning in time for a short rest before dinner Never al low hard riding on a full stomach and it is better not to ride at all for half an hour to an hour after eating a full meal even when in perfect health In tEe case of relaxed patella and strained knee tendos it has done almost a miracle for the oaso was of ten years standing and nad been treated by numerous num-erous physicians of lintl cflif nlo rltV riil benefit She was unable to walk any dis tance or go tip or clown stairs with com fort In a recent inn she rode 60 miles Inside of twelve hours and vas In a bet ter condition next day than she would have been after walking a dozen blocks one year ago In prolapsus irritable ovaries spinal irritation and nervous debility we have had no chance to make observations but should permit riding under proper restrictions Ur Laiimer is of the opinion that in learning to ride the novice should choose a smooth level road and restrict the exercise ex-ercise to half an hour at first He is against the regulation ladys wheel be cause it is heavier and allows of more seat vibration and urges women to ride the diamnr frame wheel all men use Too much frame vibration is bad for weak pelvic muscies Continuing he said We have found the following rules give the best results First wear no corset cor-set or waist with steel in front second wear all wool garments next to the boly third low or loose shoes so the ankles may have unobstructed action fourth as little weight as possble In order to re duce the weight of clothing to a minimum and enable ladles to ride a light weight wheel it is self evident we must abandon the skirt at the outset for with it she cannot ride the full frame wheel and must still adhere to the heavy drop frame and endure the extra vibration Then what shall she wear Our own preference would be the knickerbocker but as that is a little too advanced for the present time we must rest content with the bloomer suit This will enable her to ride the lightest wheels mount and dismount dis-mount easily and get the greatest amount of pleasure with the least exertion out of her ride As there are yet many who cling to the skirt we will give a few of its disadvantages and dangers In mount lag fr ss ir > r > rA or less hound to swing to one side and fall over the saddle in a manner man-ner to be uncomfortable If made short enough to prevent this it Is open to all the objections raised against the bloomer and more Again in falling to one side Jt is liable to become entangled with pedal ped-al and cause a severe fall In one case of this kind the lady had her clothing torn off at the waist and became so entangled en-tangled n her wheel that she could not rise from the ground until the writer went to her assistance Since then no more skirts for her Even in a still day the skirt has much air resistance while in a wind it becomes a veritable load and its sudden shifting adds much to its burden and the labor of keeping the wheel evenly balanced It also acts more or less as a funnel concentrating a current cur-rent of ar upon the abdoman with its at tondnrvt danETOs In the line of Bodily or rather leg exposure take it on a windy day and to use the expression of the day the bloomer is simr > lv not in it while in the matter of weight it Is a load little understood In a sitting position posi-tion the skirt rests more or less heavily upon the knees and when w see hat with every turn of the pedal that weight has to be raised from S to 12 inches ttm if we allow but ten ounces or onefourth the weight of the ordinary skirt as the amount raided it reaches a total of over 150 pounds for every mile traveled V > have vet to see the woman who once having donned the bloomer
