Show BRYAN REPLIES I TO CARLISLE I I I Not a Populist But a Demo ocrat Staunch and True READY FOR A DEBATE Might Give the Secretary a Chance to Explain As to Dignity Bryan DOCK Xot Bc lieve that An American Who Has So Little Faith in His Country As 1 to Employ a RothsehildMor gait Syndicate to Protect the Treasury of the United States Has Any Dignity to Impart to Others St Louis June ExCongressman W J Bryan of Nebraska who passed through here this afternoon on his way to Booneville Mo had this to say to Carlisles refusal to debate with him at the Lexington Chatauqua on July 5 I am to discuss the silver question but I knew nothing of the proposed debate until I saw Secretary Carlisles interview in this mornings paper I would be willing to debate with him if the Chatauqua so desired but not with any idea of acquiring dignity for I do not think an American who has so little faith in his countrymen as to employ a RothschildMorgan syndicate to protect the treasury of the United States has any dignity to impart to others But a debate might afford Mr Carlisle Car-lisle an opportunity to explain some things concerning which he has been studiously silent As to the charge that 1 am a Populist Popu-list I would say that I am now a Democrat Dem-ocrat and always have been a Democrat Demo-crat I said in Nebraska in 1S93 that I would not follow the Democratic party to the gold standard if it ever adopted a gold standard I repeated this at Jackson Miss in reply to a question but I have always said that I did not believe the Democratic party will ever declare for a gold standard The struggle in he Democratic party Is to determine whether the gold bugs can use the organization as a vehicle ve-hicle for the advancement of plutocracy plu-tocracy or whether the party will stand upon Democratic principles The silver Democrats expect to control con-trol the next national convention and I have no doubt that Mr Cleveland and Olr Carlisle will either bolt or vote the Republican ticket |
