Show CHlEr ENGINEER RETIRED General Case Is Succeeded hy General Gen-eral CraigMll Washington May BrigadierGeneral Thomas Lincoln Casey chief of the engineers engi-neers of the army was reljeved today having reached the age limit of Gi years General Casey is one of the most noted engineers of his time and his name has been connected with many public Works He was a member of the West Point class of 1852 and among his classmates were Generals Harry W Slocum George Crook Alex D Mc Cook S D Stanley August V Kantz General L HartsofC and Jerome N Bonaparte a grandson of the brother of Napoleon General Casey had his first independent work on the Pacific coast between 1859 and 1861 when he built a military road i Washington He was erY active in the war and j had charge several important works He became a captain in the arly part of the war and was brevetfed twice for meritorious service HP was with the I I i North Atlantic squHdVknv in the tirst i expedition against Fort Fisher After tne close of the war he was engaged in j a number of important public works While he was still a lieutenantcolonel 1 in the engineer corps he was placed in i charge of the Washington monument and completed i after he became colonel This was one of the important engineering efforts of the time He was also given charge of the new library building in Washington and completed the large state war and navy buildings in this city He was promoted brigadiergeneral and chief of engineers in July 1888 and all the government public works on rivers and harbors a well as many Tublc buildings build-ings have been under his direction He will still remain by designation of Congress in charge of the library building and the Washington Aqueduct Aque-duct and receive the full compensation of a brigadiergeneral until these works are completed He was a son of Brevet I Bre-vet BrigadierGeneral Charles Casey I |
