number than either of his i two Demo cratlc competitors and greater tan some of the Republicans After the announcement of the re sclt of the count in poll 2 John 11 Cannon addressed tlhe board and suM that he desired to renew ihis motion for a recarevass of Mr RaleigCis vote in tihis poll for the reason that the 1 total of straight Democratic tickets was greater than the amount credited to Raleigh on the Italy sheets This he did in behalf o Mr Raleigh Mr Smith standing on Oils original Smi1 snding iis protest to the effect which was 10 same i The request was denied by a negative the vote on the part of Nye and Kurd Dale supporting The demand for an entire canvass as to all the candidates I was explained that jthe board was only counting the ballots to settle the difference between Raleigh Smith ana i McCune In the Second and TQiird polls I and that their vote would not affect tae election of the others on < the lst I Mr Dale announced that it < a the determination of the board to count 242 2S6 for Mr Smidh In poll 2 instead of I A Question Settled I During the handling Of the ballots i in the latter poll tlhe Question of Uhe 1 wellknown broken u t the name of I McCune and change of paper of the i ballots was informally raised investigated inves-tigated and settled There was some sligiht difference in he paper tout so I very slight that it might have oe from the difference in any two sheets I of tinted paper The broken u was L in some and not in others and most I probably occurred from a ibreak in Che type after a portion had heeu printed I wit the u perfect To settle the question Republican Chair Crane I pulled one out of his pocket and compared com-pared them his had the broken Und u-nd as it was asuredly the fac simile sim-ile of those used at the election showed that the broken u iproof ol ballot box stuffing was purely imaginary im-aginary agnary Ont of deference to the wiSes of Mr Cannon who desired to consult wi t oher attorneys the board adjourned until 10 a m today I the boar conclude to give McCune and Raleigh the increase which was 5ncidentally developed in their favor and also take from John Henry Smitix and George R Emery the number which they appear to have lost the result will be that all the Democratic candidates will have a higher number of vote than all the Republicans I This will b a proposition for consideration con-sideration this morning |
