Show BARRETT SCOTT CASE Exciting Scenes in the LegIslature Stories Told by Farmers Lincoln Neb Jan 23The most exciting ex-citing scenes in this legislature occurred last night The Barrett Scott lynching was under discussion and reference was made to the resolution denouncing the lynching of Scott when Edward Howard Democrat arose to offer a resolution Howard is editor of the Papilion Times His resolution was that the house denounce the lynching of Charles Smith a negro which occurred oc-curred in Omaha October 10 1891 and in which several hundreds of the best citizens of Omaha took part The whoe house was at once in an uproar several members standing on their desks and shouting vainly for recognition Howard gravely said that he thought It only right to raise no discrimination bebween white and colored lynching i The roll was called the Republicans voting to lay ithe resolution on the table Dr Ricketts the colored member mem-ber from Omaha arose and in a towering tower-ing passion denounced the Republican members for deserting the colored man in this way Several members asked leave to change their vote The changes were agreed to and the motion to lay on the table was lost Then the motion to denounce the Smith lynching was carried by a vote of 76 to 12 I |
