Show THE PURPOSE IN VIEW I What is the reason that our Repub ican contemporary whichi says it is not a Republican organ becomes so terribly agitated every time The Herald Her-ald calls for the detection and punishment punish-ment of the rascals who changed the election returns That paper has declared de-clared emphatically that it knows who hey are If that is true why should it be disburbed over The Heralds demand de-mand for their detection and punishment punish-ment If crime has been committed and the evidence goes to show that there haswhy should there not be a determined deter-mined effort to hunt down the criminals crim-inals The Herald has offered two suggestions One is that some of the money which the Tribune Is collecting to fee lawyers shall be used towards the detection and punishment of the forgers whoever they may be We do not care whether they prove to be Democrats or Republicans The other is that those who claim to know the guilty persons shall go before the next gramd jury and tell what they profess to know Why should that arouse the ire and bring forth the venom of our inconsistent incon-sistent neighbor It says in reference to The Heralds remarks on this emitter emit-ter The people were advised not to send money to help investigate the frauds to find out and fasten the proof upon the perpetrators If we were to use the language of our intemperate contemporary we would respond with its favorite argument argu-ment and say that is a lie and the writer is a measureless liar But we will simply remark that The Herald has never advised anything of the kind but on the contrary has expressed ex-pressed the opinion that every means possible Should be devised to find out and fasten the proof upon the perpetrators perpe-trators That has been our demand ever since the evidences were given of actual fraud in connection with the returns We believe that the anxiety of the Tribune people is much greater that the Republicans shall control the convention con-vention than that the manipulators of I the returns shall be detected and punished pun-ished The Herald has no knowledge as to the guilty persons Suspicion is a long way from proof It does not follow because the changes said to have been made in the returns tend to favor Democratic candidates that they were made by Democratic hands But as to that we do noft care Let the punishment fall on the guilty and let the innocent be cleared That is what we ask and sneering will not answer the demand Let those < who profess to know be required to tell it all There is nothing set forth in the Tribune peoples call about finding out the guilty parties and fastening the proof upon the perpetrators of the forgeries for-geries Of course af they do not want any of the funds collected to be used for that purpose they need apt spend it that way But they should not fly into ai rage and sputter falsehood false-hood when the suggestions are made I that they might use some for that purpose and that they disclose the names of the men whom they say they I know commljtted the crime As to the money being gathered in the people who contribute should of course say what they want done with H The call from the Tribune for the cash was to prevent the manifest injustice in-justice of anauegeod attempt to secure a Democratic majority in the constitu I tional convention It has been repeatedly repeat-edly stated that at was to enforce an honest count of the votes for consti utional delegates What is > the Tribunes Trib-unes idea of an honest count Nothing but that which wall give a strong majority to the Republicans in he convention I Our neighbor asks about The Herald Her-ald Suppose it was called upon to supply sup-ply that evidence of fraud in the Sanpete returns what would it do Well we would elite the testimony in court including that part which showed that Commissioner Sherman j and his man had those returns for two days in their private possession I I the only evidence adduced of any such I personal and private handTing of those returns and say we have no other evidence evi-dence but the Tribune people say they know who the guilty parties are call I I them The Herald has not been on the inside in-side track of the miserable business which has been transacted for some I I nefarious purpose The Tribune has professed to know a great deal about it from te beginning We would like I I to have the whole matter disclosed from start to finish and the guilty punished as they deserve Let justice be done though Democrats fail or Republicans Re-publicans are pulled up and condemned con-demned The anxfiety of our neighbor does not I seem to run that way Its idea of political purity is that the Republican majority must be counted in no matter mat-ter what the votes might disclose That Republican defeat would be certain cer-tain evidence of fraud and Democratic Demo-cratic victory conclusive proof of crime The pretense that the mOney collected is to enforce an honest count ds a sham The purpose is to prevent any count at all but to compel com-pel acceptance of doubtful returns because be-cause 4Jhey would secure Republican control of the convention That insured in-sured the Tribune would not care a curse for the rest |
