Show OUR IJUBLIC SCHOOLS Now that the school term is about to end and promotions will be in order in the pubiC schools fond parents are becoming unduly anxious for tire advancement ad-vancement of their offspring Many Of our good citizens will proceed to interview inter-view teachers and principals with the object of securing promotion whether deserved or undeserved Such appeals should not be made or if matte should ba rigidly denied Thoroughness should jbe the prime object of our teaching I force The foundation of an education I must be sound or the superstructure will i show flaws Prejudice and favorit I I ism alike should not be found in our schools An unearned promotion will be I injurious both to the child promoted and to those of his felow pupils who must be retarded While the teacher struggles to make good the deficiencies lof j his former training We heard of a teacher apropos of this subject who I visited the parents of a child deficient in preparation and not entitled to advancement ad-vancement to the higher grade and notified them of this fact but assured I them at the same time of her willingness willing-ness to promote if the parents desired I l it This is playing at school teaching There should be no favoritism I Let our schools be distinguished for the excellence of their work |
