NADE DSH FOR LIBERTY Second Attempt of Deserter Prom Ohio Volunteers Chicago Aug 23J H Brockman a deserter serving a sentence of one year in the military prl8on t Fort Sheridan made a dash for lIberty and was fired upon by the guard He was In a road cleaning crew and suddenly jumped to the thicket Trooper WIllIam Johnson John-son fired five shots one ball striking the fugitive in the back He did not stop however The sound of shots in rapid auccebsion attracted the attention of the corporal of the guard who sent out ten skirmishers to deploy in a I wooded ravine ladlng to the mice shore Post Quartermaster Sergeant I Muller rail l I1rokmans footsteps along the creek bed of the ravine For nearly an hour the soldiers searched the wopds for a mile north and south along the lake Muller continued In dma tactics and suddenly came upon the escaped prisoner crouching upon a joist of a wagon bridge that crossed the main ravine The prisoner was placed in solitary confinement This Is the second attempt of prisoner prison-er to escape from the authorities at Fort Sheridan in two aceks Brock man enlisted last February after the mustering out of the Ohio volunteer regiment
