| Show I ON ATELOPE ISLAND I Speculation as to a Government Agents Tip Yesterday morning Special Agent J I S Stdger of the InteriOr department Washington accompanied by Attorney Ed W Senior and others took an early I train for Syracuse and from then left by boat for the purpose of visiting Antelope An-telope Island The exact purpose of Agent SUdgers I trip could not be learned but as he Is I usually looking up violations of the I timber laws It Is thought his visit to i the Island at this time has to du with I I maters comIng under that head It was thought possible that he had I bn instructed to look into the merits of the protests which have recently been made by clam owners on the t island against the states appropriation I of certain lands claimed to contain I mineral but It was learned at the I United States land ofce yesterday that such was not the case Register Frank I I D Hobbs stated that several protests had been fed in his office by mineral I claim owners against the states ap I proprlaton or selection of lands on that I Islald hut thee protests did not require re-quire investigation by special agents When such protests were fled here Mr I Hobbs said they wen forwarded to the secretary of the interior who inest I gated their merits and If teasonahle grounds existed they woilti < be returned I to the land office here and a hearing I would he ordered What could he the purpose therefore of Mr Stdges I visit to the Island he was unprepared to say unless It was to look into matter mat-ter pertaining to violations of the tim her laws The purposes of the trip will probably becoMe known on the return of the part to the city |
