MAJOR GRANTS FOOL FRiENDS I A politician of this city who inci L dentally owns n Republican newspaper is attempting to injure Major R W Youngs reputation as a soldier and a gentleman by printing abusive interviews inter-views with returned volunteers It does not matter that the interviews inter-views are repudiated by the men to whom they are attributed If they were all honest expressions of opinion they could not aect the public knowledge knowl-edge that Major Young has been a brave soldIer an efficient officer whose record is unimpeachable The most serious charge against him > is that he wanted the batteries retained in service that he mIght get a good berth for himself The fact as known to all is that Major Ma-jor Young tried hard to get the batteries bat-teries mustered out that when they were retained in the islands he exposed himself cinstantl on the firing line endured the hardships of the field and carried himself as in American soldier in expected to If the atteries were t disgusted at theIr retention after their r term of enlistment had expired they may thank the heroic Otis and the ben z eficent McKinley whom Major Youngs defamer so adores The Utah batteries and their officers made a magnificent reputation as fighters and earned enough glory to satisfy ever man in the command as F well as every citizen of this state They have finished their serVice and are ex peeted to say what they please about i their cperience and their officers Such comment adds to the general gal f ety of the season and costs nothing But I when one of theIr officers is besUmed t by a cheap politician for political ends the aforesaid politician is apt to find < bin job an extremely unpleasant one i betore he gets through I Apparently the attack on Major t Young Is intended to benefit Major Grant by leaving him the onlY available avail-ablE candidate for mayor dn a platform t of military glor Th Herald does notE not-E believe that Major Grant himself will t tolerate any such performance On the lcontra it believes he has already cauglt the rift of public opinion in Fthis matter and is praying to be saved from hIs fopl friends
