Show CHICAGO LOSES THE T t UfCJU C HEADQUARTERS A HE REMOVED TO EVANSTON ILL 4 > tl Will Be Located Hereafter nFonner Home of Bliss Francis > Willard Business of Convention X Seattle Wash Oct 21II cansi legation leg-ation of three important amendments to the constitution of the organization and in celebrating the silver jubilee of the society the delegates to the W C T U convention passed the second day of the session Two of the three amendments amend-ments were adopted One of these removes re-moves the headquarters of the national organization from Chfcago where they have been located for many years to Evanston Ills at Rest Cottage the late home of Miss Frances Willard The adoption of the amendment was had after a long and at times rather heatea debate in which much feeling was manifested In the discussion of this proposition the national officers without exception supported the amendment It develoned that among the officers and delegates there was a strong desire to have the permanent headquarters of the organization organi-zation at the place made hallpwed to them by the long residence of Miss Willard and by the associations growing grow-ing out of her occupancy of her rooms in Rest Cottage The opposition to the movement which came from delegates from various var-ious parts of the country was beaten I down under arguments founded upon the sentiment referred to When the vote was taken shortly after noon it stood 174 for the amendment and 22 I against No little interest was manifested in the debate over the amendment makIng national organizers members of the executive ex-ecutive committee or the union This 1 amendment had been up a number of times at previous conventions It was I voted down after considerable debate by a twothirds vote Another amendment making state secretaries of the Loyal Temperance Legion exofficio delegates to national conventions was carried without opposition oppo-sition The afternoon programme largely given over to the celebration of the twentyfifth anniversary of the formation forma-tion of the union A circus bill poster printed in Canton 0 as p takeoff on the crusaders which started the movement move-ment preceding the formation in 1874 of the W C T U was presented the society by Mrs Rebecca Chambers president oMhe Pennsylvania W C TEl T-El Only three of these posters are ir existence The language used in them was such as was calculated to inspire ridicule of the crusade movement Mrs Mary B Reese of this city who nominated Miss WiUard for president of the union at the first convention which nomination she declined spoke to the convention During the remainder remain-der of the afternoon the convention listened lis-tened to short addresses from state superintendents su-perintendents and visitors |
