Show y OWBPS VICTMS ARf FINER FIVE CITIZENS OF RICHFIELD ENTER PLEAS OF GUILTY Penalties Range From 1150 Down to 125 and the Judge Delivers a Lecture On Unlawful Cohabitation awfu Cohabitaton Special to The Herald Richfield Utah Oct 21The cases wherein charges of unlawful cohabitation cohabita-tion were made against five citizens of this place by C 11 Owen were disposed of by Judge McCarty in the district court today All the defendants entered en-tered pleas of guilty and fines were imposed a follows Paul Poulson 150 Joseph S Home 75 Hans Christensen Christen-sen 50 L C Christensen and O P Borg 25 each The judge in imposing the penalty stated that whilethe offense was similar simi-lar in all cases a uniform fine would not be uniform punishment a the financial circumstances of some were much better than that of others He therefore made such fines a he believed be-lieved would be equitable The court made some very pointed I remarks in passing sentence I had come to the ears of the court from I sources that could be relied upon that Mr Poulson had made remarks of such lIr a character that the court knew he was a wifu violator It must be understood under-stood that they were violating a law which they as Mormons secured the adoption of in 1S92 An attempt was made later to secretly drop this clause from that statute but the code ha reinforced re-inforced it and it is the law today and men who are leading such lives and will endeavor in the future to do as the defendants have been doing are making themselves liable and they cannot hope to escape punishment whenever charges well founded are brought against them The court warned them that the punishment pun-ishment meted out this time would be no criterion should they b brought up again The defendants promised to obey the law in the future = |
