Show SHORT LINE RUMORS 4 Auditor and Treasurer May Go to Omaha 4 CONSOLIDATE WITH U P 4 DIRECTORS WILL MEET AT NEW YORK THIS WEEK I Change May Be Decided Upon at These Meetings Not Believed That Traffic and Operating Departments De-partments Will Be Disturbad Local Lo-cal Officials Know Nothing I A resort was in circulation among the railroad fraternity yesterday that a change of some magnitude in the administrative ad-ministrative offices of the Oregon Short line is about to be effected It gained credence as the day vore on in spite of the fact that the local officials wnen approached expressed the usual I know nothing about it sentiment The i report states tnat the offices of the auditor and treasurer are soon to be transferred to Omaha while the traffic and operating departments will remain in this city In view otf the fact that the Oregon Railroad Navi0 < ation company com-pany is in the came position regarding the Union Pacific system as is the Short I Line it is not unlikely that a corresponding corre-sponding change will take place in the general offices of that corporation nov situated in Portland I The report is more than plausible on the ground that it Is there convenient to consolidate the auditing interests in the place Aiieie the head administrative I administra-tive offices of the system are situated it will do away with misunderstandings and complications and in addition cut I down the office expenses to about one half of what they arc at present Tae traffic and operating departments are j mare effective as they are at present situated andfor 15vat reason it is improbable im-probable that any change is coiuem plnced in these departments A meeting of the board of directors oi the siiorc Line will be held In New York on the 2Sth of this month and it is probable that the change above outlined wIll be ordered at that time The Union Pacific directors will hold their meeting in New York the same diT Previous to the segregation of the Short Line from the Union Pacific the traffic and operating department of the Short Line were looked after by a division di-vision superintendent general freight agent and general passenger agent located lo-cated in Salt Lake while the main offices of-fices were situated at Oimaha The same conditions prevail now as were In force previous to the segregation The causes that gave rise to the conditions con-ditions thai have prevailed for the past two years are no longer in existence therefore it is only natural to assume that mutters will so adjust themselves I to bring about the original state cf affairs af-fairs In 1S97 the legislature of Utnh passed a law permitting the incorporation < n railroad companies under terms much more liberal than could be obtained from other states with toe undeisuiiiu ing that the Short Line would maintain main-tain all of its general offices in this state There were no strings attached to the incorporation of the railroad I company the legislature naturally made no specific mention of the Short Line company when the law was passed I pass-ed so the latter company is at liberty to withdraw its general offices whenever when-ever it sees tit |
