| Show I = PROSPEROUS SALINA V Something Abont the Solid Firma of That Thriving Town A traveling correspondent of THE HEKILD visited the thriving little town of Salina the past week and writes the following follow-ing regarding the business firms of the place SALINA COOP This prominent institution was first I established in the year 1872 by the following I follow-ing gentlemen who are still shareholders Messrs William McFadyen John Johnson Peter Rasmussen J C Anderson and some others In those days it was hard to rustle the nest egg 135 with which to start butt I but-t was done and Mr William McFadyen officiated as superintendent 1S79 with varying success always however declaring declar-ing a dividend of some amount from 50 to 95 per cent In 1878 Mr John Johnson took charge for a brief period until Mr McFadyens return from a European mission V mis-sion Mr McFadyen retained this position until 1SS5 when the present incumbent Mr Hans Gottfredson was installed and he has retained the prosperity of the institution V institu-tion until today it is on a par with any of its kind in the territory having paid an average dividend of 35 per cent to date S and is today worth clear of all liabilities S 25000 on which they carry an insurance of 10000 < They are now occupying a fine sandstone S fireproof store that covers 33x60 feet with two stories and carry a stock of goods I that is hard to peer south of Salt Lake Their goods embrace a full line of general i merchandise notions agricultural implements imple-ments etc audit is recognized as beincr the banner store of the south They are now making wholesale trade an important feature finding a market in the south and east that is a valuable acquisition to their large retail trade HATES A ROBINSON are two young men who opened up in tho furniture business about one year ago Mr Robinson is a gentleman who secured his practical experience in commercial life at tho Salina Coop Mr Hayes is well known in schoehastic and literary circles having been consigned to Salina from the B Y academy as teacher about three years assuming charge of the d strict schools immediately on arriving there He with far seeing intelligence conceived the idea that such a business as this would be profitable hence with the cooperation of Mr Robinson he launched out and today is doing an immense trade and within sixty days will be installed in their elegant new brick store just east of the coop It has an area of two stories and will consti tute one of the best buildings in t wn Their trade comprises the entire south and Deludes many who in the past either sent east or to Salt Lake but who now see they can buy just as cheap if not cheaper right at home ELMER TATLOR A CO JUAB AND SALINA This is is a firm that has not been estab ished long in Salina but has made things howl in the meantime The firm as the name implies is composed largely of Mr Elmer Taylor of Juab a gentleman who is so well known in both financial and commercial com-mercial circles as a sort of giant The junior members of the firm are Messrs J ETaylor who is manager at Juab and H F Barr who is located at Salina They do a colossal business in wool hides pelts and general produce They have already shipped 600000 pounds from Salina this year and about five hundred thousand pounds from their Juab branch They intend in-tend to erect large warehouse at Salina and establish a business that will swamp anything of the kind in the south Mr Barr has his headquarters and office at the Salina Coop THE KNIGHTON HOUSE Who does not know of this home for the wearv Not any one who has been to Salina twice at least The whole family combine to make all feel at home which they invariably do The accommodations at this house are second to none south of Salt Lake and if business continues tc prosper as it has since Mr K took it we expect to see a Junior Knutsford located at Salina in the near future The Deseret Telegraph company have arranged with Miss Babe Knighton to assume as-sume charge and she has had the office removed to the hotel where it will be much more convenient to the public FEXTONS HARNESS snot is located on Main street in the very hear of the commercial contra of the town and his stock of imported goods embraces al the appurtenances of the equine race from a currycomb or odd buckle to a fine buggy harness or laays saddle Mr Pexton is a young man who hails from Nephi and brings with him a practical knowledge of I his business that is a boon to the people in the south He has been established about six months and finds his venture a grand success FRED G WILLES is a gentleman who is well known in Salt Lake in early days He located in Salina about ten years ago and has taken his ups and doVns with the town till today he is I in the van with the foremost merchants in town is on the top round of society and fills the position of town president or mayor of Salina V Ho has two stores in Salina both of which draw a good share of the trade and has the agency for two insurance companies compan-ies all of which combine with his public duties to make him always busy WHITLOCK CANDLAND are two young men who were born right here in the territory Having natural commercial com-mercial ability coupled with Mr Cant lands apothecarean knowledge conceived tho idea of opening up a drug business This was started about a year ago and their venture proved such a success that today they are completing and by tile 15th inst will have been installed in a fine fitof twostory 21x36 pressed brick store one of the finest in town The stock of drugs carried embraces all usually found in a first class drug store and a full line of patent medicines Their prospects are certainly bright V V F OLIVERS BAKERY RESTAURANT AND STORE About ted years ago Mr F Oliver commenced I com-menced the manufacture or refining of mineral salt and supplied a largo market i for the crude salt After making a comfortable com-fortable living till about two years since he with his wife thought it a good idea to open a restaurant and bakery to which they afterward added a small stock of groceries and notions This has been added to till now they have a good trade and are in the van with all the enterprises of Salina Mrs Oliver is the manager and has secured a trade well worth having SALINA RICUFIELD AND MARTSVALE STAGE LINE Mr Geo E Bench of Manti has this line of business to look after Ho has a fully equipped system that gets over the ground in good shape making all points on schedule and still leaves you thinking Im not fleeced out of every cent when occasion oc-casion requires a trip by stage south of the terminus HOFFHEINS THE BARBER Salina can boast of as good a barber as has ever whittled whiskers The gentleman gentle-man who furnishes this shop with a name is well known in Salt Lake having come from there about two years ago and has secured a good central location in SaUna to lather his customers faces and cut them loose requirements of the most fastiduous The advent of Mr Schroder filled a long felt want in Salina Misses Millie and Mary Schroder of Nephi are furnishing the millinery wants of tho town also carrying a full line of novelties fancy work etc They have styled their firm the Salina Bazaar and it is a veritable bazaar of fancy notion There is no doubt but what the ladies will secure a patronage in
