43 Seconds H Three great railroad officials Urging to beat tho railroad fast run Jning record That is the announcement an-nouncement that is setting railroad circl s agog allover all-over the world Yet lor the mil lionaires engaged in the race there Is nothing but f amo for them to win and they are chasing tho elusive bubble simply for the honor that winning gives them The three millionaires in question are Jay Gould of tho Union Pacific and also of the Texas Pacific H Walter Webb of the I ew York Central and Hudson River and Archie McLeod of the Philadelphia Reading railroad Tho foundation of the great match was built on a joke President McLeod of tho Philadelphia Reading always stops when In this city at tho Windsor hotel Jay Gould and H Walter Webb often drop Into the hotel of an evening Tho last time Mr McLeod was in town the three great railroad men met and of course began talking railroads Somehow or other the conversation flrifted on to fast running on railroads said Mr Webb yesterday and we each thought that wo could break the railroad record I feel aure that the next time that make a trip in the Atalanta which is Mr Goulds private car I shall travel faster than has over been traveled before said Mr Gould Nonesenso rejoined Mr McLeod Iran I-ran I am sure beat all possible records some day over tho Philadelphia Reading Read-ing system Mr Webb continued his story by pointing point-Ing out that like Brer Rabbithelaylow But he admits that ho quifttly intimated to both Mr Gould and Mr McLeod that they were quite mistaken for he know that he could run faster over the Central road than they possibly could over any other road in tlio country Very well gentlemen laughed MrMc Leod you will all hear from me someday some-day tIT tI-T e conversation had almost been forgot ten oy Dom Mr weoo ana Mr Gould when one day both these gentlemen received a personal note from Mr McLeod aud which further contained a clipping from a Philadelphia I Phila-delphia paper This is what the note said PHILADELPHIA Pa 1891 Beat this A MCLEOD The clipping announced that President McLeod had ridden over a portion of the Philadelphia Reading railroad at a speed Df ninetyfour miles per hour I will tell you all about it said MrMc Leod to a Journal man I was in my priVate pri-Vate car tho Mineola with General Superintendent Super-intendent J H Olhausen of the Central railroad of New Jersey W F White of tho Atchison Topeka Santa Fe and a party of Philadelphia friends early in the lna wa ware feas11 feaw T 11 town for Reading Pa and the car was drawn by engine No 504 with James Mpn ahan in charge Just as we were pulling out of Allentown I happened to think of the conversation I had had some time before be-fore with Mr Gould and Mr Webb about fast running on railroads I determined to beat the record so I sent word to the engineer en-gineer that for the next ten miles I wanted I him to make the fastest time possible I told ni5 guests of what I intended doing do-ing and Mr Olhausen and Mr White hud stopwatches so there would be no question as to the accuracy of the time made Wo I found that when the ten miles had been run that we had traveled at tile rate of ninety four miles an hour Then I wrote a joking but laconic letter to Mr Gould and Mr Webb Except for receiving congratulations from both Mr Gould and Mr Webb nothing I noth-ing was heard for several weeks of the ef I feet Mr McLeods feat had made upon the other two railroad magnates Then Mr McLeod and Mr Webo wore surprised at eceiving the following note and which further inclosed a clipping from a Chicago paper which announced that on April 22 891 Mr Gould had run from Council Bluffs Iowa to Chicago at the rate of 103 miles an hour This is what the note said CHICAGO Ill Sept 23 18J1 Break It I JAY GOULD HOW GOULD MADE 102 MILES AN HOUR The story of tile remarkable record was told to a Journal man the other day by Edward Ed-ward Gould son of the millionaire The run was made with the Chicago Northwestern sj stem locomotive No 555 or as she is known over tho west as the Triple Five said Mr Gould Albert Convers the Northwestern fast record making engineer was in char e and the locomotive was attached simnly to Mr Goulds private car tho Atalanta Mrs George Gould my brother Howard Gould and Dr J P Munn fathers private physician physi-cian and Third Vice Paesident W HNew man and General Manager J M Whitman of the Chicago Northwestern system were ir the car Mr Gould Happened to tell Mr Newman of the note that Mr McLeod had sent him after the conversation at the Windsor so Mr Newman replied that he fancied that Mr Gould could send Mr McLeod and Mi Webb notes of victory after the party had reached Chicago The conversation was held while in the depot at Council Bluffs and as the train rushed out of the station it was easy to see that Engineer Convors mo ml business Just 102 miles an hour was made en the run and which defeated Mr McLeod by eight miles But still another mark was jet for Mr McLeod and Mr Webb as from Elburn to Geneva 111 a distance of eicht and one half miles tho train ran it in live minutes This time was registered by tho watches of the gentlemen on board and by the telegraph tele-graph operators at both Elburn and Geneva Gene-va Last Wednesday morniniz Mr McLeod and Mr Gould were astonished at receiving I a note which contained a clipping from aNew a-New York paper to the effect that Mr H Walter Webb had smashed all kinds of railroad rail-road records into kindling wood Here is the note in question j NEW YORK Sept 161891 Break itl H WALTER WEBD Mr Webb was in a jubilant mood when asked by a Journal man to tell him all about it yesterday Last Monday I determined to show Mr Gould and Mr McLeod that they really know nothing at all about fast railroad run nini You see I wanted to send them that little Break it1 note said Mr Webb Instead of taking one car wo took three They were tho dining car Mariquita the buffet car Traveler and General Superintendent Superin-tendent Theodore Voorhees car In the party were Mr Voorhees William Wil-liam Buchanan superintendent of motive power General Passenger Agent Daniels Superintendent D 13 McCoy Angus Sin clair editor of the Nationtil l Car and Locomotive Locomo-tive Builder A G Leonard my private secretary and myself Mr Sinclair and Mr Voorhees acted as timekeepers Engine En-gine No 807 with Frederick Buchanan a brother of William Buchanan in charge But he only ran us as far as Albany Then Engineer John Hogan took us in char eWe e-We left the Grand Central station at r 1 e5 rtr J III T Iif making better time than a mile in a minute We stopped three minutes and twentyeipht seconds at Syracuse and changed 10 engine No 862 with Engineer Hozan in har eWe e-We whirled the next 150 miles off in 143 minutes which is xvondeiful when it is remarked re-marked that at Fairport we had to stop seven minutes and fifty seconds for a hotbox hot-box to be packed with waste This stop is Included in our running time When we had to make this brief halt we had made 351 miles in 301 minutes including stops at at Albany and Syracuse so you see that we had really gone faster than a mile a minute min-ute all the way from New York to Fair portWhen When we dashed away for Buffalo te had to make up for lost time We reached the East Buffalo station 43032100 miles from New York in just 440 minutes Deducting De-ducting fourteen minutes and fortyfour seconds for stops we ran tho distance in 423 minutes and 44 seconds Our time from the Grand Central station to the Central station in Buffalo was 448 minutes in the I gross or 140 miles in 433 minutes and 44 I seconds with ston allowances deducted This made us run at the rate of fl9 25100 miles an hour without allowing for stops A MILE IN rOKTTTWO SECONDS That of course beats the worlds long distance fast running record But wo also established the shortdistance record as a mile on the Eastern and a mile on the Western West-ern division were both spun off in fortytwo seconds Dont you think I bad a right to write that letter to Mr Gould and Mr Mc Leod I Mr Webbs performance is unprecedented I unprecedent-ed The fastest longdistanco running time in America prior to Mr WOODS trip I was held by the North Shore road which run in 1S53 from Buffalo to Weehawken t 422 5100 miles in 73 minutes making an actual running time of fiftyone miles an hour The best English longdistance record was made on tho Northwestern railroad of England in 1SSS when a train ran 400 miles in 472 minutes making an average lime of 53 4 1000 miles an hour The question now is how long before Mr Gould and Mr McLopd will write Mr Webb a note containing the challenge Break it Journal |
