| Show MRI PERKINS GAME How He Induced the Boys to HoldUp Hold-Up the Car Men HE ISk VERY CLEVER FRAUD FRAUDI The StoryTola by the Beardless Youths Has Every Appearance of Being the Truth Some time ago two beardless boys named Archer and Stafford and a man giving the name William Perkins created quite a sensation by holding up the conductor and motormau of a Rapid Transit carat Forest Dale When the parties appeared for examination ex-amination in the police court the next day on the charge of robbery it was found that Perkins had mysteriously disappeared The attorney for the defense insisted on his being brought in and tinally had a subpoena issued for him but the policeman only smiled and informed the attorney that he didnt know where Perkins was Afterwards it was generally understood that Stafford and Archer bad asked Perkins to join them in I the robbery and the latter consented but his only purpose in so doing was to enable the officers to capture the other fellows red handed It now appears that this understanding under-standing was not correct and from certain developments in the grand jury room it was deemed advisable to capture Perkins This task was delegated to Deputy Marshal Cannon Can-non and Sheriff Burt and they performed it well After a long search they fiually succeeded in arresting their man yesterday while on his way to the Deep Crook country coun-try and ho will have to stand trial with the others Stafford and Archer who as before stated are mere boys say that they met Perkins whose true name by the way is William Hyde at a mining cainp down south He was continually telling them about the success of holdups and claimed to possess some ability in that line himself him-self Finally the three came to the city together and Perkins or Hyde then un folaed a scheme for holding up a streetcar street-car The boys refused to bite at first say ing they did not want to do anything criminal crimi-nal but Perkins finally persuaded them to act with him and the night was set After I the plans had all been laid Perkins hied himself to Mrfrsnal Youngs office and gave tho whole thing away taking care of course to put himself in the best light and throwing all the blame for the conception of the scheme on the boys All worked well aniJ on the night of the robbery the marshal and half a dozen officers armed with rifles repaired to an appointed spot near the scene of tho robbery Perkins had a great deal of trouble in getting theo the-o s to accompany him but finally succeeded suc-ceeded and the car was held up Perkins doing the gun act When it was all over ho carefully herded his assistants into the officers arms and they were arrested It is not known exactly how Perkins managed to drop out of sight at that juncture but the supposition is that the officers believ jug that he had done them a great service in assisting them to capture two desperate crooks allowdti him to go and also that he took with him something substantial for his services There 310 many things which L corroborate the statement of the boys and L it is likely that on the trial he will shown L to have conspired to get the boys to commit the crime and that he conceived and engineered en-gineered the whole thing |
