| Show AFTER EEEBS SCALP Congressman Compton of Maryland Mary-land Wants a Committee Appointed to Investigate and Make Public the Frauds in the Election of Thomas BReed B-Reed in Maine Last Fall Special to TIE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK March IS Barnes Compton Congressman from the Fifth district of Maryland said today that he wanted a congressional committee appointed to investigate in-vestigate and make public tho frauds in the election of Thomas B Reed in Maine last fall Mr Compton was elected to the last Congress by a plurality of 181 votes Reed ordered him thrown out of his seat to maker make-r om for Sidney Mudd an insignificant man without a record Last fall Mr Compton Comp-ton was elected by 1800 plurity and now he wants to give Mr Reed a taste of his I own medicine It will not bo possible to contest Reeds seat Mr Compton sid to a reporter but I amin favor of sending a committee into his district to investigate the frauds that were perpetrated there It can bo shown that there was greater corruption in the First Maine district than in the southern districts about which so much fuss is made It ought to be made public to tho whole country I The tariff cannot be kept from assuming assum-ing the leading position ac an issue in the I next national campaign In the next Con I grass it is doubtful if a general tariff bill will be reported in the House it would ba better totake up separate articles I would bring in a short bill repealing that part of the McKinley bill which increases the duty j on tin apd sOld it to the Senate I would do the same with wool and the same with I twine etc That would bo the most satisfactory I satis-factory and effective way of remedying the I evils brought into existence by the McKin JOY law The Senate would not pass a general built one were sent to itt |
