| Show TUB WORTHY AttE WELCOME It is observed that a good many of tne foreignborn citizens of this country are baking alarm at the very pronounced sentiment senti-ment recently developed here in favor of restricting immigration The fear is that this sentiment will soon assert itself in a declaration against the admission of all foreigners We do not believe that any American entertains the idea that the time will ever come when the republic will say that foreigners cannot come here and become citizens or that anyone will over suggest that a certain class of foreigners will not be welcome No statesman will ever advance ad-vance such a proposition no politician will ever advocate it only a demagogue of a low order would suggest it All that Americans will ever ask is that they shall be permitted to select their company and say whom they will admit and whom they will reject Tho evil of indiscriminate and unrestricted immigration and its dangers have been felt hence tho necessity for curing cur-ing the evil and meeting the danger but nobody thinks of heaping out any except those whose presence is offensive and threatening Thorp are many whose coming com-ing is desirable They assimilate with our people become one with us and aro in every respect loyal and trustworthy citizens These will always be welcome whether they are rich or poor Those that Americans will shut out aro the criminals tha fellows who come hereto here-to escape punishment for crimes committed in their own countries and with the intention inten-tion of continuing their lives of criminality the paupers who are charges upon the public at home and expect toe b to-e charges upon the public here the Anarchists who are opposed to government govern-ment of every description and regard laws as institutions for the oppression rather than the protection of mankind the degraded de-graded laborers of the old world who are accustomed to receive mere pittances for their work who are little higher in the scale of intelligence than the beasts and who would drag American laborers down to their level and finally those who have so little conception of our government either in its theory or its practice that they cannot can-not become good and loyal citizens We want only those to come who can be American Amer-ican citizens giving their devotion to the land of their adoption in exchange for the freedom and protection which it affords and the time is fast approaching when only these will be admitted The worthy Englishmen Eng-lishmen Scotchmen Irishmen Frenchmen French-men Germans Austrians Russians Italians Ital-ians and so on need not fear that they will ever be denied admission 10 the republic |
