| Show GOOD FOR CHINA The Chinese government has given notice to our state department that exSenator BLAIR will not be received at the imperial court and jis a consequence the administration adminis-tration will have to find a new minister to send to China and another place for the New Hampshire crank The respect for China will be heightened by this action Even Americans will like the heathens better bet-ter for this display of spirit and selfre spect Of course everybody in this country was more or less pleased with the appointment appoint-ment because it promised to get rid of BLAIR people were disposed to feel grateful grate-ful to the President for his thoughfuluess in sending the man as far away from the country as possible and now there will bo universal regret on account of the failure of HARRISONS generous scheme for ridding his countrymen of a grievous infliction And yet we would all havo despised the Chinese if they had accepted BLAIR The Senator was one of the most vicious and unreasonable of the demagogues who assailed the Chinese when the latter were objects of attack in Congress Any sort of legislation which would keep the little brown men away from our shores would be satisfactory to him and being a fanatic he I advocated the antiChinese propositions with all tho vigor and malignancy of his nature Mr BLAIR did not oppose tho Chinese because ho hated them for being an earnest Christian he can hate none of his fellow men and must necessarily love those human beings who are guilty of no wrongdoing His opposition was that of the demagogue The Chinese did not vote + and men who did vote demanded that the I Mongolians be excluded from our shores it was to please these voters whose ballots his party wanted that Mr BLAIlt assailed as-sailed the Chinese with so much vigor and unreason If the Irish didnt vote or if they all voted the Democratic ticket Mr BLAIR would urge their exclusion pro vidod the voting Germans should demand it as the price of their loyalty to the Republican Re-publican party The fact is BLAIR is a humbug and while his rejection by China probably means that he will continue to inflict this country we arc glad that the Chinese have shown so much spirit as to refuse to insulted in their own country by his presence It looks as if an insult was intended either 1 that or as if our government entertained the opinion that the Chinese didnt know enough to object when they wore imposed upon In any event they have disappointed disap-pointed the administration and will escape BLAIR |
