| Show A TARIFF BANQUET The Protectionists Dine i Mad son Square Garden LAUDATION OF HIGH PRICES McKinley Praises His Own Work Introduced 1 aa the Next Governor of Ohio The Coming Campaign NEW YOUK April 29Fivo hundred guests tonight attended tho banquet of the American Protective Tariff league in Mad ison Square garden The diningroom was handsomely decorated and everything about everyting the aftair was emblematic of American industries the dishes cutlery tablecloths napkins wines cigars and even tin menu cards were of American manufacture The list of toasts was a lengthy one Cor nelius N Bliss presided in place of Presi dent Ammidown absent by reason of illness Bliss in his remarks said it is said by some editors and public men that the events of last November have shown that the socalled educational campaign of the opponents of American policies has borne fruit and that protection has been discredited by the pea pie of the United States This appears to be an assumption by a few who have usurped the title of tariff reformers That really belongs to us That the intelligent people of this country require education on economic questions by a body of close stu dents who however honest in convictions are without practical experience is an im pertinence Secretary Noble responded to the toast The President saying in part This i3 an auspicious time for the members of the Republican party to assemble The pro tection of our Industries is uniting our countrymen everywhere There is indeed a President of the United States and you will agree with mo in saying he is a good President Let us maintain peace with honor looking not abroad for directions or approval Applause Bliss proposed the health of VicePresi dent Morton who briefly thanked the assembly as-sembly and was loudly applauded Major McKinley was then introduced as the next governor of Ohio and the cheer ing did not subside for five minutes Ho made brief speech in which he said We will have a tariff so long as we have a government gov-ernment If I over regretted that I was a protectionist that regret does not exist tonight I am glad to belong to the party of such men as Webster Clay Lincoln Grant Hayes Garfield and Harrison Senator Dolpb of Oregon responded to the toast Protection as it Affects the Prosperity of the People and Development of the Pacific Coast The Republicans of the Pacific Coast be said do not believe the tariff is a local issue they hold protection national that all industries of the nation are so inseparably insepar-ably connected that one cannot suffer without with-out injury to the whole The growth and prosperity of the commerce of the Pacific coast are dependent largely upon a protec tion policy The McKinley tariff act was what was demanded was what the party promised a measure to protect the interests inter-ests of America The issue upon which the next presidential elec lion will be fought will be precisely the issue upon whion President Harrison was elected and Cleveland defeated I am confident when the issue is again squarely put before the people with ample opportunity oppor-tunity to discuss as well as to refute misrepresentations mis-representations from free trade sources wnen the last tariff legislation has had time to vindicate itself I am confident the result will be an increased majority for protec tion Applause Addresses were also made by Messrs Hiscock Dolliver Farqnhar Sheridan Horton and others continuing until a late hour McKinley further said the country is prosperous and what is wanted is to go on prospering and no mon < eying with the tariff He predicted the tariff law will not be changed in the next ten years unless by the Republican party on protection lines Senator Aldrich spoke to the toast Maintenance Main-tenance of the Protective System India pensible to Profitable Commerce Senator Jones of Nevada sent a letter in which ho said the Chinese wall of protection pro-tection was precisely what was needed in this country to keep out the squalor and distress dis-tress that attend low wages abroad Pop ular government rests upon the affections of the people and men can have no affection for a government under which they starve |
