| Show The Street Sprinkling Proposition To the Editor THE HERALD No doubt a majority of the property owners on the immense area of streets which the city council proposes to sprinkle this season aro opposed to paying 10 cents a foot for that business and it is well for them to protest against such a reckless waste of money and water All such matters mat-ters should be decided by a fair election of the taxpayers interested and not bo left to the protests of objectors There ought to be an elective yes required and not merely a disapprobative no permitted The sprinkling proposed is not at all necessary The assessment is excessive for most i not all of the streets and parts of streets on some of the lots away from the centre of the city amounting to as much as the total taxes of all kinds were a very few years ago This is an outrage Many of the streets or parts of streets in the districts named to be sprinkled at 10 cents a foot do not need to be sprinkled more than from one to threa days a week Two days a week would be ample and 2 or or 3 cents would be all that is necessary for that amount of sprinkling A little dust now and then at least away from the business bus-iness centres would be immensely preferable prefer-able to ever present mud prfer The law tells us that the water shall housed ho-used first for domestic purposes next for irrigation of cultivated lands whereas sprinkling the streets is neither a domestic domes-tic nor irrigation use of the water I thirty miles of streets are to bo daily sprinkled it must be done by robbing the owners of lots of the irrigation water which they have had the right to use and have been using for nearly half a century Is that right Is it good policy Nothing that is not right can be good policy Who can approve of watering the streets extensively while the trees and other vegetation in the gardens are drying up for lack of that very water which really belongs of right to them Muddy streets and desert gardens I Who I wants such 1 state of things Yet that is what our city council proposes to bring about and charge the taxpayers 1 cents a foot for it too I want no such thing TAXPAYER |
