Show DR BOTHWELL DIES After 1 Heroic Struggle for Life He Succumbs The Physicians Were Unable to Give Him Re liefAii Autopsy Will be HeM lefAl Wi 1eM on This Remarkable Case Special i to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK May 4After two weeks unparalelled suffering Rev Dr George Bothwell pastor of the Congregational burch Brooklyn died last night The accident which resulthd iu his death was he inhaling of a cork into thebronchial tube He was surrounded by bis family and friends Drs Buck and Butler labored with him to the last His old trend Rev Dr Storrs administered religious consolation consola-tion An autopsy will in all probability be necessary About 8 oclock yesterday morning Dr Rushmore who is Dr Both wolls family physician arrived at the hospital hos-pital and found his patient unconscious and slowly sinking During the day Dr Both well became partly conscious several times but these instances were few and his moments mo-ments of consciousness brief In his exhausted condition he made no I communication to those present Just before the end tcatno he regained I consciousness and seemed to be making an effort to speak Then he heaved a deep sigh and the soul of the plucky sufferer had llown His wife sat holding his hand and did not realize for several minutes her husband was dead Then she gave way tea te-a violent outburst of grief alter which she was gently led out of the room of the dead clergyman He had changed wonder fully so much as to be scarcely recognizable recogniz-able In a few days his magnificent physique had wasted away to a mere skeleton skel-eton In the morning his pulse ran up to 180 and in the afternoon it beat so fast that it could not be counted Later it could L not be felt at all I was said then by the I attending physicians that he could not pos sibly live more than half an hour He did I live however for several hours and pus pled the doctors one of whom said pur he never saw such remarkable vitality The only nourishment taken for days was fre quent hypodermic injections of spartein and brandy Those and lhose oxygen pumped t into his lungs kept the patIent alive Yes terday ho consumed liUO 2IO gallons of oxygen and at 7 oclock I fresh supply was sent I for He consumed a like amount on Satur day Mrs Bothwells devotion to her hus band has been most remarkable and the physicians him fear she win long survive Prayers were offered in i all the Brooklyn churches yesterday morning for Dr Both well and Dr Taltnage made the special appeal to the Almighty following half We pray for this servant the min ister of the gospel in the hospital under the stroke of dire catastrophe O Lord is there no way for his rescue I Quicken the ingenuity of the surgeons and i it be pos sible bring him buck again to his family and bring him back again to the house of God and pulpit where he has been accus tomed to preach Hear the prayers that shall ascend this day from all parts ot the city in behalf of this afflicted brother I The case has attracted attrcted widespread inter est 1 over this country and Europe |
