Show THAT OUSTED MAIN I The Damage Greater Than Vas at First Supposed I Unless some settlement is made within the next few days or the city shows some disposition to foot the losses occasioned by the breaking of the water main early Saturday morning morn-ing the people who sustained the losses threaten to commence suits against the municipality in the district court The aggregate claims will be of considerable consider-able proportions as the loss to the stock of Remington Johnson alone has been placed by three disinterested appraisers at 6300 and the building is also heavily damaged The damage to the stocks of liquors cannot yet be determined as a thorough test will be I necessary the ice cold water having chilled the wines and other liquors which were kept at an even temperature ture with steam heat I has been suggested that the great quantity of beans currants dried fruits raisins hams and other goods which are now almost as good as before be-fore being watered to the consumers but are valueless to the firm be distributed dis-tributed among the charity organizations organiza-tions of the city for the poor and Messrs Remington and Johnson take kindly to the suggestion Yesterday they made an effort to reach an understanding under-standing with the city officials to allow al-low the goods to be disposed of in the way named after first having been inventoried in-ventoried the loser in the prospective suit to foot the bill They realize that unless some disposition is made of the damaged goods they will within the next few days be worthless to anybody any-body Mayor Baskin referred the entire en-tire matter to the committee on water supply and the committee held a meeting meet-ing last night for the purpose of considering con-sidering the claims An adjournment was taken to this morning no agreement ment having been reached The members mem-bers of the committee and in fact all of the city officials have been very careful in their position on this matter l or Iis ana aeciine 10 admit that tne city is in any way liable for the damage Speaking of the matter last night Chief Stanton of the fire department stated that the pressure maintained by the waterworks department is never over 130 pounds and as a general rule does not go over 110 pounds in the day i time and 125 pounds at night During the summer months the pressure ranges from 60 to 75 pounds on account of the great amount of water taken out I for sprinkling purposes |
