Show Is HE A LEPER A Horrible Case on Commercial Street A Recent Arrival from San Francisco and the Terrible Condition He is In In a room in the rear of the Chinese art store of Quong Sing Wah oa Commercial street there lives Leo Fong a young Chi naman suffering from a terribly fatal and loathsome disease one which bears about the same relation to the genuine leprosy that varialold does to smallpox but which in its ravages is as terrible to the senses and to life as is leprosy itself Lee Fong arrived here a month ago from San Francisco Fran-cisco and was then suffering from the disease dis-ease which has wasted him away to a mere skeleton He has steadily grown worse and yesterday yester-day when a HERALD reporter saw him ha was indeed iu a pitiable condition Reclining on a bamboo settee in B room thich with the heavy noxious fumes of the opium pipe lay the leprous man emaciated emaci-ated and wasted to a skeleton almost His eyes were seemingly about to start from his head The sunken flesh with the skin drawn tightly over his cheek bones gave his face a horrible appearance The hands and arms dried withered and nerveless were thse of a mummy The left leg un bandaged from the knee down was covered cov-ered with dry skin and flesh scaling away in patches and each bone stood prominently promi-nently out in the left foot The right leg was a mass of Horrible gaping running sores from whick came a watery matter almost as unbearable to the sight as it was to the souse of smell From the knee down to the ankle the leg was covered with probably twenty of these sores each about the Size of a small lead pencil and according to the Chinamans nurses they extended to the bone The disease it is said first appeared in small red blotches upon the surface of the skin This gradually becomes a pustule pus-tule and then sinks eating its way without spreading or sloughing straight to the bone It then dries up and the flesh and skin scale away until finally the person attacked at-tacked wastes away seemingly until life becomes extinct from the drain made upon the body The disease is stated by Quong Sing to be contagious and Lee Fong is kept isolated in one corner of the room and la handled by none of tue Chinamen with bare hands Dr Benedict who is treating Lea Fong has succeeded relieving the mans suffering suffer-ing to a great extent but he seems to feel that the hand of death is upon him and with the apathy and stoicism of his race is calmly awaiting the end which can hardly be far off Ha is unable to speak any English En-glish and talks in his own language but little lit-tle making simple answers to inquiries of his wants The case loathsome and horrible as it Is attracts sympathy for the unfortunate Chinaman and all the members of bis race seem to realize his pitablo condition and do all they can to relieve his sufferings |
