Show CRUSHED rOA PULP A Horrible Accident to George Connors Last Night He Falls From a Car His Foot I Crushed aud Amputation Follows In a Serious Condition George Connors a journeyman plumber living on Twelfth East between Brigham and First South had his foot crashed beneath be-neath a city railway car yesterday afternoon after-noon and now lies at St Marys hospital minus a portion of 0 limb and in c serious condition Connors had spent the day down town drinking freely and at 6 oclock started homo with a friend They boarded car No 1 on First South and stood upon the front platform with Motorman Gray Connors who staggered and moved around on the street could hardly keep his feet on the platformand until Eleventh East was reached his friend held him in a sitting position At Eleventh Eat Con nors struggled to his feet and as the car struck the switch east of that street he pitched headlong from the platform In some manner his right foot was caught beneath the wheels and was crushed into a pulp Connors made no outcry out-cry and it was not known that he was hurt until the motorman and his friend got off to help him to his feet 1 hen he complained com-plained of his foot feeling tired His condition con-dition discovered he was put on board of the car and dropped back to the hospital Here Dr Pinkerton was called to see him i and decided that in order to save the mans life amputation was necessary The foot was taken off completely at a point above the ankle by the surgeon and at midnight Connors was sleeping under the effects of an opiate Ho is twentysix years of age and unmarried The physician states that unless something some-thing unforseen arises Connors will recover re-cover in a few weeks but at present his condition is I serious one tanpete Valley Extension James Clinton of Nephi passed north on Sunday He has been in Salina purchasing purchas-ing fall clips He says that about a million lion pounds of wool will be all that is brought in this fall In speaking of the probable extension of the Sanpete Valley railroad he says that it needs only 5U000 to put the road on a paying basis as that wi extend it to Manti Unless the owners own-ers do this their two or three hundred thousand dollars capital will be dead pro as it does not at present perty pay expanses ex-panses Enterprise Electric Boada in the Future Talking of railway matters the other day with President Egan of the Chicago Great Western the new name of the Chicago St Paul 5c Kansas City line says the Northwest Magazine I asked him whether he did not think that the era of railway building was nearly closed and that the next century wouldbe distinguished by the improvement of the common roads No he replied the next century is going to witness the building of electric lines allover all-over the country to transport the farmers and their families to town and haul their products to market from their own doors He went on to say that an electric railroad can be built about as cheaply as a good macadamized road Every well settled country ho believed would soon be crossed by numerous electric roads leading t3 the small towns and the steam railway stations Teaming willthua ba practically done away with except to haul produce from the fields and granaries to the sidetrack side-track platforms in front of the farms Locomotives of the United states If all the locomotives in the United States were coupled together they would make a train of solid iron and steel over 300 miles long Add the passenger cars and we would have 300 miles mora of wood and iron This would give us a gigantic passenger train 610 miles in length counting count-ing both engines and cars Should wo want a huge mixed train we might add the box flat and every other kind of car and our train would then have a total length of over 7000 miles The passenger cars in this gigantic train would ba capable of seating 1500000 people and upon the freight cars could baloaded the weight of the pyramids ot Egypt and all the state capitols in the United States besides GlobeDemocrat |
