Show WASEATLY NABBED I The Arrest of a Supposed Pueblo I Murder HIS TALK WITH THE MARSHAL Who He is and Where He Came From Together To-gether With Other Personal History Two Mysterious Women Early last month Marshal Young received re-ceived a letter from Sheriff Sinclair of Pueblo notifying him that one Lem Swank was wanted at that place for brutally murdering mur-dering a man in cold blood for 300 and a gold watch The letter also stated that Swank had been living with a woman named Julia Sullivan at Pueblo and she was supposed to be in Salt Lake then The marshal was requested to look out for tho parties Accompanying the letter was a photograph of Swank Neither the name of the murdered man nor the time when the crime was committed wejre given and with the meager information stated the marshal commenced his search and yesterday yester-day morning Swank was run down and is now safely behind thu bars Supposing that the fellow would call at the postofllce for his mail Marshal Young has had an ollicer stationed there for some days past At about 11 oclock yesterday morning Officer I Parker was on duty there when ho noticed i a young man who boro a marked resemblance resem-blance to the photograph of Swank enter and walk up to the delivery window I Parksr was at his heels and sure enough the fellow aslced if there was I ANY MAIL Ion LEM SVVAXK I There was none and as he turned away the officer took him by the arm and said You are my prisoner n S What 101 asked Swank innocently You will learn that later replied the officer and he marched his prisoner oft to jail When he was searched at the city hall some letters and a pawn ticket were found on his person The pawn ticket was issued by the Plaza loan office near the old city hall San Francisco for one Elgin watch No 5b7GUO oajwhicli 510 had been loaned for thirty days and it was issued on September 22 IbaO Among the letter were some recommending Frank Manning of Iron Mountain Michigan as a competent compe-tent aad honest grocery clerK Then there was a letter written to Swank on September Septem-ber S at Salida by Lottie Brainara informing in-forming him that she was about to leave for Salt Lake and stating that she would write him again when she arrived here These comprised his effects Marshal Young put Swank through an examination his private office last evening eve-ning and a HEUMD rerorter was permitted to tako it in Swank is a man about twenty years of ago weighs 150 pounds stands about 5 feet 7 inches His hair is dark and curly and his nose Has a Roman cast He was roughly dressed and his appearance was rather stupid Are you Lem Swank n inquired the marshal Well 1 suppose I cant deny it answered the prisoner as my name is on my arm Ho v long have you been here was the next question x About four or five weeks replied Swank S I suppose you know what you are here forNo No I dont knowanything about Well 1 arrested you for the sheriff of Pueblo Swank here showed a sudden interest in the matter and said What for For murder steatonously replied the marshal Vell thats funny aint iU was Swanks comment Where are you from Swank inquired the chief v I was born in Findlay Ohio and went to Pueblo where my brotherinlaw has a livery stable in July lb9J I remained there until that woman wrote to me SUE SENT ME MONEY at Salida to come on here and I did fo I stayed with her here two days or three days and one night she went out aud that was the last 1 saw of her After she skipped out I had to go to work aud I got a job down at the Jordan narrows where I worked up to a few days ago I dont know where the Sullivan woman is The last I heard of her she was in Denver I never saw uerhere I dont know anything at ail about this murder If 1 had killed him for 8JCO I would have some of the money wouldnt If I dont know about that replieJ the marshal There are some men in Pueblo who have always been trying to get me into trouble resumed Swank and this is their work S ALL I WANT IS A TAIU TRIAL and some witnesses Well they generally have fair trials there dont they asKed the marshal You bet thej dont said Swank with some earnestness How long l since youve been in San rancisco asKed me marsnal but to this the prisoner would give no direct answer The marshal then questioned him further iu regard to his leaving Pueblo and the prisoner stated that he came directly to this city to meet bring you to SaltLake asked the marshal I SwitCh saw at once that he had made a blunder but he did not attempt to lie out of itTo To the reporter Swank stated that while at Pueblo he worked as bill poster for the opera house S Marshal Young was totiliod last evening that an officer would start from Pueblo for the prisoner at once Tno Pneblo officials are confident that the right man has been caught and the outcome will be awaited with interest |
