Show BLOOD ON THE MOON t i Hades Will Pop when the Election Elec-tion is Oer 4 DEAWJNG THE PARTY LINES TliB Democrats Jump on Goodwins Frame With I Demand as to the Force Bill Question I has been an open secret among the friends and admirers of the leader of Good wins Galoots that the gentleman who left the arid plains of Nevada to escape the I pangs of hunger and who has since lived so high as to make him haughty and proud 4 that this same exjudge of a Nevada police court is an ardent advocate of the infamous force bilL As a result of this there was a resolution adopted at the recent meeting of L the Democratic club appointing a commit I tee t Vait upon the Liberal candidate and L I demand of him that he pledge himself in case of his election that ho will work only for Utah and that ho will take part in no legislation inimical to the interests of the Democratic party or for which a Democrat Dem-ocrat could not consistent vote Good win has not been within reach since the passacro of the resolution until yesterday arJY l tie morning the committe wuitd upon him and made the demand referred to A in the resolution The same came with a suddenness that almost dazed the advance agent of the disfranchisement gang as the look in his face plainly showed There was an air of business about the committee however that convinced him that he had better do what he could to conciliate the members of the new Democratic clue and others of a similar political faith and after a silence for a few moments he finally managed man-aged to gasp out a reply to the effect that his answer would appear in the Tribune of this morning or Monday morning The morning committee told him that was entirely satis factory but that i toe did not give the pledge demanded their support would be withdrawn and the members of the club would do all their power t defeat him Speaking on this question yesterday a member of the club said when asked if cUb said i they were really sincere and earnest in the matter Most assuredly For myself I would rather remain under Peoples party rule for the next twenty years than aid by my vote to send a man to Congress who held such views and who would put them into practice if ho had the opportunity The time has gone by when the intelligent Liberals of this city can be led around by the Tribune string There has been a grow lug feeling of resentment for some time past and it is gaining strength every hour Liberalism i is dead in Utah and the Peo ltn > pany IS gomg to pIeces rapidly I do not believe that there will ever again be a PeopleLiberal campaign at least in so far L as the delegate to Congress is concerned I The men who broke away from the Liberal I chains during the recent county campaign builded better than they knew camplgn success achieved by them has others who were inclined to encouraged faint hearted Dissension is rife through faint the whole Liberal ranks and matters are fast reaches a point where there must be a crash When that point is reached the malcontents and strifebreeders must stand from under In this same connection also we give the salutatory of the Salt Lake Democrat which made its appearance last evening Itsajs The Salt Lake Democrat does not begin its career with flourish of trumpets begn No syndicate of capitalists is behind i as speculative supporters of an uncertain newspaper enterprise Watered stock is not offered an large oferedn blocks to the oublic nor is the large couraged t suscribe for it by promises of impossible dividends Perfecting printing presses stereo typed forms and luxurious appointments are not among its material endowments A it stands upon the threshold of a future which has yet to develop the characteristics char-acteristics that shall mark i i cannot boast of power and influence It has never UCLa e na1 porIon OI a which pUblc looked to it for guidance it has never slighted or ridiculed or denounced those citizens who looked with ctzen disfavor upon an imperious newspaper oligarchy nor has it pent its remaining breath in fugling for the promotion and official promoton reward of a galaxy of small satelites gaaxy It enters the newspaper field it is be lieved with becoming modestywithout any rainbow promises without any suddenly discovered mission discoverd without em nity or prejudice and without any selfish I or personal mclive It simply takes the position that the time has arrived when te arred a newspaper accept able to Democrats in the party sense of tee word may reasonably look forward to such a support as will insure both its life and its usefulness The political climate of Utah has altered A change has come about which is not the part of ignorance i to ignore te ornc t igore There was a time when the situation as altogether sinrn1ir situaton olAd wane taut situation continued it was not only justifiable but patriotic for men of all shades of opinion to put aside aide their politics and come together upon the common ground of Liberalism or more properly speaking upon the common ground of Americanism cmmon And though the mass of voters of Democratic faith in Democrato politics have conscientiously con-scientiously stood together upon that com mon ground while their Republican brethren occasionally wavered Republcn cated fusion with the cted enemy and generally got most of the pudding and the praise there is abundant reason for believing that great good was accomplished by the united front presented by the two great political polical parties in opposition to the party dominated domi-nated entirely by a powerful ctiurch A new regime was brought about in a number of Utah cities and counties and a beneficial progressive and essentially pa rIOtO lnuence was exertd genera11y upon the territory We are by no means prepared to say that the same front should not be preented by the same parties on all questions entd cal self government l cities and counties I since to divide upon such questions would be to invite defeat or to questons upon one Bide or the other for the votes of those whom both the great parties have treated in the past as enemies When it is deemed essential for the benefit ofuprogression t unite for political purposes we favor a joint convention wherein Democrats will receive a more ma trial recognition than that of chairman ship while their Republican coworkers claim and secure all the nomination for of fice in the name of the Liberal party I Such Liberal action tends not only to offensive partisanship but also to the utter obliteration of any political t uttr oblteraton polticl rights save those emouuting from Republicans Republca Upon the general question of queston nreserv ing and preaching party principles think the time has come for drawing the we dividing line and perfecting a general ganization general or The changed attitude of the Mormon church has challenged the chalenged attention of the Hnt i io lflt t t f reason for ignoring that change within the I borders of Utah territory The presiiing judges of our courts and many high territorial officers have acccptec the manifesto promulgated at the accptd gen eral conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints as Saint necessarily necessariy meaning what just it says llt is morally certain that the death knell knel of Mormon disfranchisement has been sounded and that the bills hung UD in the United States Senate will continue to dangle from their pegs ontnne I The question arises therefore whether the mass of Democratic and Republican I voters can be further held together in a nineteenth century crusade against a re ligiois sect which has discarded its obnoy ious tenets and further I it would be de de siranle i found possible The Peoples party must necessarily dteentcgrate by degrees and its numbers must ultimately take their places in the two great political parties as American voters Aericn The Republican managers have been I 3 J w quick to sce this and have hastened to t make ready against the future They agnst for years the mingled benefits and disadvantages of a long estab shed daily newspaper which circulated widely both in and out of Utah and which njoyed at once a high reputation for par than ability and fanaticism The wing of their party which was not represented by the Tribune company have proceeded > to capitalize a publishing insti tution forthemseives and Republican lit Republcan lt rature will soon be scattered abroad in L storm leaflets that fall like the flakes of a snow Lr So far then the Democratic party its i Democratc it cardinal doctrines and current teachings have been left left not only without an orgau and expositor but witnout any medium for public exression even by volunteer contri utors The Democrat offers such a medium and it remains for Democrats to say whether it hall be built up into a daily publication worthy of the Democratic party a large The principles cherished by the Demo ratic party are not destined to be dis carded in the near future by the millions of voters whoelected a President United States u only six years ago this month They are vital to the perpetuity of free institutions They are inseparably twined with the theory of our government and they must remain of value so long as that govern men t remains popular and representative in fact a well a in name I the republicshall become and continue what its founders intended then the mis I sion of the Democratic party has only just begun And this we take it is justification enough in standing sponser at tne christen chrsten ng of the Salt Lake Democrat ATTEP THE ELECTION The Tribune and the Times are now lying togethor in a double sense The present 4 uuuuness nowever is merely assumed L and after Goodwin has Been defeated we may reasonably expect to see the two Re i publican organs in a cat and dogfight The new stockholders of the Times it is said t have blood in their eve The Tribune has frown entirely too fat and saucy to please hem its wings too are growing to 0 greater length than the rood of Utah do lands and the Time will enter the arena as a contestant for some of the good living that has given the old lady the gout The Times is patting Goodwin on the back just now In a few weeks all this will be wi hanged however and the riot will be in ugurated Iir is merely another illustra ton of the old saw that politics make poltcs male strange bedfellows The stockholders of the new company composed of city county territorial ana government officials with one or two exceptions have no love for the exceptons down the street and while they may agree with her to a certain extent on national questions there is every reason to believe that her treatment of local ques tions will recive a very frequent roasting As showing the attitude of the Tribune it may merely be said that Mr Tibunc re cently attempted to work a certain scheme hue was balked by a man who had UD to recently been a staunch
