Show I Smut on Corn I Smut on the corn originates in light spores that are carried about in the atmosphere at-mosphere It is said to enter the stem j when the plant is young and throughout through-out its whole growth the fungus is grow < lug within it but produces but little an I parent effect until about the time oi earing The smut forms oftenest on the ear but is also found on other parts of the stalk Corn seems to be the only crop in which smut appears long enough before maturity to admit of any treatment treat-ment The smut should bo cut out aa soon as the swelling is observed and be fore any of the spores have burst through At the time of harvesting all smutty ears and stalks that have been overlooked should be kept separate and destroyed and not be fed to stock to perpetuate the disease The spores ad bering to seed corn may be destroyed by soaking a few minutes in a solution of blue vitriol but this will not protect against smut in the spores manure op smutty stalks left in the field |
