Show MR GOODWINS PLATFORM Elsewhere in this issue will be found a few extracts from the pen of tho Liberal candidate for Delegate to Congress We have taken these extracts just as we came upon them in the editorial columns of Mr GOODWINS paper In all cases we have sought to quote enough to represent fairly his position That we have been successful success-ful in this is testified to b O Mr Goomvix in his paper yesterday He labors under the impression however that we have hired men to ransack his columns whereas one of the regular writers for THE HERALD simply devoted a short time each day for only four days in glancing over a few back numbers of Mr GOODWINS paper and the result is as given He triumphantly claims that the quotations vindicate him He reaffirms re-affirms them a his doctrine and policy He says All they find and they tad that plentifully is the argument that Mormons being1 subjects of an alien rule have no right to participate e in public political affairs and no real claim to the benefit of the land laws Trtottns Yor 11890 I So far we aro agreed with Mr GOOD WIN except that his expressions formerly were somewhat stronger than they are now and included a few other points that he fails either t reaffirm or deny We may safely conclude therefore that the quotations fairly represent the platform upon which the Liberal candidate stands to which he is pledged and for the consummation consum-mation of which be would devote himself if he were elected We may recapitulate a few of the leading features of Mr GOODWINS platform Ho advocates the disfranchisement of all Mormons irrespective of their past life I status future intentions present sttus or iItentons He the seizure of justifies the property of the Mormon church and its diversion to the public schools in which the children of all sects are educated He urges that all Mormons should be deprived de-prived of the right to enter land in this country He says the son of a Chinaman is better in this country than the son of n Mormon He has stated that the Mormon boys are taught treason at their mothers knee He justifies the denial of the right of trial by jury in Utah He says he would disfranchise every man In Utah if he could have a legislative commission com-mission instead of officers elected by the people Ho is said to be an advocate of the force bUI He should bo defeated and will be unless frauds of the most gigantic nature shall count him in No Mormon and no son of a Mormon can possibly vote for him No friend of Mormons can vote with a clear conscience cear for Mr GOODWIN A great many oi his own party would vote against him if they knew what he advocate Of Mr GOODWINS private character we have said nothing Vo have been told something about his refusing to pay debts and about other little matters but wo have no interest in his private affairs For he purposes of this compaign we have assumed as-sumed that Mr GOODWINS private character char-acter is of the best and havo not said a word concerning it But we are interested inter-ested in his public utterances and his policy as Delegate if elected We have therefore given additional publicity to some of the words he had already addressed ad-dressed to the public in his paper He himself now reaffirms these utterances in his paper from day to day so that there can be no possibility that his former words do not represent his present sentiments To OUt mind the platform the Liberal candidate has written for himself is cndidate wrtten himsel an unrepublican unAmerican and unmanly oneWe We cannot believe that many Americans fully cognizant of Mr GOODWINS views would voto for him Wo cannot conceive how any young man that has been reared in Utah can do otherwise other-wise than vote against him We believe that the friends of human liberty lib-erty will unit against him and defeat him with overwhelming emphasis |
