Show AX INTERESTING LECTURE Methods of Iron Working Explained to the Students Society Friday evening witnessed another interesting inter-esting session of the Students society of the Latterday Saints college After the opening exercises Instructor Walton chairman of the society introduced William Silver Esq who proceeded to deliver the second and last of a series of lectures on the subject of iron The speaker first discussed dis-cussed the varieties of fuel that could be made available in blast furnaces The respective re-spective values of charcoal anthracite etc were pointed out The dilferont kinds of fire bricks and other refractory substances used in constructing blast furnaces were explained after which an interesting history his-tory of iron casting was given showing the gradual development of modern systems and the usual each usualopposhion enel new discovery had to meet An illustration ot n coke blast furnace of a few years ago was shown to the audience A good example of this furnace was found in Ogden though it was not now in use The qualities of tho pig iron produced by these respective furnaces revealed the fact that Utah pig had merits above all others when used for smelting purposes The speaker continued by explaining tho workings of the blast furnaces with some of the great castings among which were mentioned tho great anvil now used in Russia I had a base of 10 feet square and weighed 60J tons and the great gun now being constructed lor onr own country is a casting of 40 feet in length After considering the modern methods of preparing steel Mr Silver concluded his able lecture by a brief sketch of the great ironworKs ot Herr Krupp in Prussia The lecture was illustrated throughout with charts and specimens The audience was next treated to a song by Miss MabelCooper followed by an organ solo by Miss Jentu Smith I |
