Show HIS TEOUBLESOUK RECORD Mr GOODWIN i bo never thought about it before now realizes that unless a mans Tealzes record is perfectly straight and defensible he ought Hot to run for office Mr GOOD WIN has for years been delighting botcl lobby and barroom crotvds with funny stories and saying pleasant things about dead people His listeners have laughed and the readers of his obituaries have felt kindly towards him the result being that he had tome to think that he was about the most popular man in the country that everybody admired him and endorsed all he said and all lie wrote The poor man was unfortunate in accepting the meaningless meaning-less plaudits of the fellows who enjoyed his storytelling as the will of the community He want d the nomination to Congress because he really believed he was popular and didnt know but possibly he might be elected Tho nomination was given and he went into the campaign only to have his mind disabused and to learn certain truths which ho should have known all the time One of the very first things that he learned was that while he might be a favroite with a few fellows who relish a good story well told especially when it is seasoned with artistically concocted beverage he was anything but a popular idol He early learned that there was a w de difference between the air of the Alta club rooms and the free air of this territory He was not long in learning that however hearty the laugh which was excited by the relation of a story picked up in a mining camp that L laugh did not mean a vote nor did it imply an endorsement of his political principles and personal sentiments He didnt think about it at the outset but be thinks of it now that for ten years he has been a radical radi-cal of radicals in his newspaper devising outrageous schemes for oppressing and injuring in-juring people and advocating doctrines which more than half the voters in the United States and fully half of the members mem-bers of his soealled party repudiate It has dawned upon him that while vos log a tho leader of the Libemls and telling them they must be neither R epubliccns nor Democrats he has all the time been a most rabid Republican blind in his endorsement of every Republican measure meas-ure and uncompromising his opposition to everything brought forward by Democrats We dont believe that it ever entered Mr GOODWINS head that his approval of infamous force bill which was carefully drawn for the purpose of depriving Democrats of their rights at the polls would be recalled and that he would be placed in the awkward position of having to repudiate his own utterances ut-terances or antagonize considerable number num-ber of men upon whom he had innocently and ignorantly counted a political friends because they had not asserted their Democracy Demo-cracy when he had vaunted his Republicanism canism yet he has learned that while he and Democrat can be hail fellows in a club room Democrats cannot support him for office I was all right for him t demand the disfranchisement of men who had broken no law and had showriby their lives that they wero patriotic citizens and good men it was all right we say for him to urge their disfranchisement so long as he expected nothing from tSem but when ha stands up and asks for votes he discovers that he has made a record which now comes up to prove him the rank enemy ot the great majority of the people When Mr GOODWIN was assailing Gentiles Gen-tiles who protested against the passage of the disfranchisement bill and charging that they were dishonest that they signed the protests through fear of losing Mormon Mor-mon trade he did not think of the Congressional Con-gressional nomination and that tho fair minded nonMormons he was abusing would so soon have a chance t reread his vicious articles and then go to the polls and vote against him He did not senso tho fact that he was writing a record which would rise up to plague him We dont believe that i Mr GOODWIN had Known that he would be a candidate for office and that his election depended upon the votes of the young men of this territory bo would have industriously devoted de-voted himself all theso years to saying mean and cruel and slanderous things about the fathers and mothers of the young men and thus forced the latter they being human t despise him When Mr GOODWINS hippodrome train haled at Tintic the other day and there was a manifest chilliness in the reception accorded the little company of campaigners it probably for the first time dawned upon the mind of tho gentleman that not so many months ago that they had forgotten it he nad written very savagely about a good t many of the Tintic miners We are mistaken mis-taken in the character of the men in that amp i they do not show at the polls on Tuesday that they have good memories And thus it ha gone along for ten years Mr GOODWIN has been a jolly good fellow fel-low socially but has all the time been making a record which now comes up to plague him and to make it impossible for hundreds of men to vote for him who would never have thought of going back r on any other nonMormon candidate He has alienated many Gentile Democrats and antagonized many others who are today T saying that if they vote at all it will be for JOHN T CATNE and not for the man who has abused their party almost as shamelessly shame-lessly as he has abused the Mormons and who if he could have his way would make it impossible for both Democrats and Mormons Mor-mons t vote in this republic f g Q t < MACN8FiCEN VESTIBULE EXPRESS TRAINS
