junketing trip of the Utah legislature has closed and tomorrow the members will resume their labors in the Council and House Much good may result to the institutions visited the legislators having had a splenuid opportunity of in spectine the full workings of the various departments for themselves and thus foi ruing ru-ing a more definite idea of the needs and wants of Utahs public institutions The Reform school at Ogden was the last visited the trip taking up the entire time yesterday The Union Pacific attached aspecial chair car to the regular 1025 train for the north and Ogden was reached at 1140 There were on board Councilors Peters Morrell GlendInning Haynos Greaves Representatives Repre-sentatives Seegmiller J D Irvine W H Irvine Pike Adams Sargent Allen Colton Col-ton Montgomery reporter and several others President King arrived in Ogden on the train next following having been detained by pressing business in the courts The board of directors of the school were in WAITING AT TIIE DEPOT with carriages and sleighs and the party was at once driven to the institution where the doors were all thrown open and the visitors invited to inspect every part of the building Since the recent fire the original structure has been duplicated with tho exception of the tall tower which was done away with and several tumor defects remedied At present there are forty inmates in-mates thirtythree boys and seven girls ranging in ago from six to eighteen and accommodations for considerable more There may be found little tots whom one would naturally suppose 10 be freo from the marks left by the grimy hands of sin and young men and women on whoso faces may plainly be read the traces of unbridled un-bridled passIon dissipation or worse Much credit is due the board of directors which is composed of James N Kimball Charles C Richards L B Adams L B Stephens R H Jones and Edwin G Wool ley with Henry H Rolapp secretary for the good work they have dono during the past two years Also to Superintendent E M Allison Martin Allison and their officers of-ficers for the neat appearance throughout ol the building FROM CELLAR TO GARRET the institution is as clean as soap water and energy can make it and the inmates s may well congratulate themselves on having sf hav-ing such a homo and being possessed of such comfortable quarters The boys and girls occupy the opposite ends of the building for sleeping purposes each being provided with a neat iron bedstead covered with pleuty of the best and warmest bedding bed-ding The dormitories are models of neatness neat-ness The girls each have a small bureau in which to keep her finery and tho reporter re-porter noticed that on one was placed a photograph of Marshal Young showing that the gentlemans popularity with the female world extends even as far as the reform school The boys are dressed in brown uniforms with brass buttons and when grouped together present a pleasing appearance Taken altogether they are a bright looking lot of boys and are fast becoming be-coming proficient in their studies SOME SPEECHES President Kimball callel upon Speaker Seegmiller to address the inmates in the school room after the party had made a full tour of the building The gentleman spoke for a few minutes in a kindly manner man-ner and gave the boys and girls advice which if followed will place them far above the shame of reform school life Ha was followed by Prof Ciuff of the Brig ham Young academy at Provo who made an eloquent appeal to the honor manhood and womanhood in some cases lying dormant dor-mant of his listeners Representative Ferry came next and his remarks so touched the hearts of tho boys and girls that all of the latter even including includ-ing the notorious Maggie Forkner were In tears and many of the boys turned their heads to hide the suspicious moisture in tbeir eyes Mr Ferry told of his own little lit-tle boys and girls One of the former was at one ctime rather cinclined to be head strong and unmanageable thinking as most boys do that they are much wiser than their parents But through what the gentleman terms an act of Providence Provi-dence he was stricken with a terrible affliction af-fliction and during his long stay in the hospital he has learned the valuable lesson of patience and his now life promises to open under most auspicious circumstances The gentleman from Summit was unusually eloquent which is saying much and there are no doubts but his remarks sank deep in hearts of the wayward lads and lassies THE BAXQUET At 2 oclock the party again took to the carriages and was driven directly to the Reed hotel where under the auspices of the chamber of commerce and city government govern-ment a banquet had been prepared The great dining room which is on the top floor from whose windows a view may be 1 seen unequaled in the west was profusely decorated with cut and potted flowers ferns and plants Tables were spread the entire length of the room in double lines the president of the council speaker of the House Col W H Harvey Mayor Tumor C i C Richards and several others having the places of honor at the head Col Harvey Har-vey president of the chamber of commerce com-merce acted as toast master The Heed hotel has ever been noted for its excellent treatment of guests and yesterday was no exception to the rule The following MENU was served occupying on behalf of the Ogden chamber of commerce com-merce and Ogden city and her citizens He then called upon Mayor Turner to respond to the toast Ogden and Our City Government Govern-ment President King responded to The Legislative Leg-islative Council in a most happy vein and related a dream which he had had giving an insight into the distant future He was followed by Speaker Seegmiller responding to the toast The House While he did not feel able to paint such a word picture like that of Mr King he could quote the words of Chief Inaian Joe All these my boys All these my boys Pretty good boys This was his own opinion of tho members of tho House They are pretty good boys indeed Representative Ferry waxed eloquent over the subject Utahs Mines and remarked re-marked that he owed his election to the chairmanship of tho free silver convention at Denver to two ladies of Salt Lake one of Provo and one of Ogden President James N Kimball presented the needs of The Utah Reform School and outlined its course Colonel Harvey stated that Weber county desired to issue bonds for the construction of bridges and building of boulevards and roads in order that every farm and ranch in the valleys and every mine In the mountains moun-tains might be connected He introduced Judge L W Shurtliff who briefly outlined out-lined the proposed plan of procedure to secure better roads and bridges to Veoer county Hon A Hatch was introduced as the king errperor and potentate of Wasatch The genial gentleman occupied about five minutes in that style purely his own During tbe banquet Kents full orchestra discoursed sweet music in the rotunda adding greatly to the success of the occasion occa-sion At 545 the gathering broke up the legislators feeling well toward Ogden and her ever enterprising citizens As one gentleman remarked Ogden usually gets in on the ground floor The returning train reached this city at 730 pm Several members of the legislature and representatives of the press will leave this morning at diO on the Rio Grande Western West-ern for Provo to inspect the inmates and wards of the asylum |
