Show Violations of the Contract Labor law NEW YORK Jan 23Contract Labor Inspectors I In-spectors Conkling and Osborne sent from this city to tho mining districts of Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania to investigate the working of the alien contract labor law have sent their report to Secretary Foster The report states they discovered evidence of wholesale whole-sale violation of the law In the mines surrounding Scranton ninetenths of the miners at present employed are Hungarians Hunga-rians or Slavs Five years ago the miners there were nearly all Americans At the Anon mine in western Pennsylvania Hungarian Hun-garian and Italian Immigrants came in squads of 200 at a time direct from the barge office in this city under un-der charge of padronea At the mines near Caabondale in 1SSG there were COO miners all American citizens citi-zens While the miners strike was on in lfeS9 and 1590 large numbers of Slavs and Hungarians were brought to the mines from Castle Garden under the protection of Pinker on detectives At the last election elec-tion out of 787 miners employed there just sixtyeight were entitled to vole The inspectors found immigrants were brought over from Europe In droves passed through the barge office by an agent and taken to the mines to supersede American miners There are several men employed by mine owners whose sole duty is to visit the barge office and get immigration con tract laborers passed through Ono man in particular was nicknamed Much Cousin man as ho would visit the barge office and securo the release of immigrants claiming them as cousins brothers or other reIn tIres |
