Show IDAHO REPUBLICANS 1 Roberts Issues a Call for a Meeting Meet-ing of All the State Leagues To Meet In Boise February 12 Cases In the State Supreme Court Congressman Sweets Arid Laud Bill BOISE Crrr Ida Jan 23Special telegram tele-gram j to TUB HERALD Attorney General Roberts a member of the national committee com-mittee of the Republican league has issued a call for a meeting for all the leagues in the state in this city February 12 for the purpose of organizing a state league Each local league is entitled to five members In the state supreme court in tho case of Mayhow vs Burke and Knott vs Burke the motion to strike out part of the trans script was denied In the case of J M Burke vs Scott Mc Donald the court affirmed the judgment of the court below which reduced plaintiffs costs to 0000 The opinion of the court was by Huston Congressman Willis Sweets bill recently introduced in Congress to settle the prob lem of arid lands in Idaho contains many good features Mr Sweet is of the opinion that Congress will not spend any money to reclaim arid lands nor will it part uncondi tionally with these sands to the state It will insist that this land be divided into small tracts and owned by bona fide resi dents Mr Sweets bill takes the question ques-tion of arid lands out of politics by the ap pointment of a nonpartisan commission it provides that work may be commenced as rapidly as tracts of land are regulated by the government It limits buildings and provides carefully against land jobbing l ii i 1 li It gives to each owner a perpetual water right but reserves the main water way in the name of the stale for the benefit of all The stab will be in charge arid lands under certain restrictions While not per feet Sweets bill seems to meet with general gen-eral approval here THE TTLERLA3T CHANCE CASE The Tyler company commenced testimony testi-mony in rebuttal today in the Last Chance mining suit Phil ORourke testified that ho had a conversation with Mr Ralston ono of the defendants witnesses who had said that he Ralston had found ore in certain cuts of the surface of the Last Chance in which Ralston had said he would swear to anything for a consideration Thomas Gibbons produced specimens from the surface cuts wnicb had been assayed Robert Mobly assayer at the United States assay office this city said be had made assays for Mr Gibbons and exhibited ex-hibited samples the result of which was that there was no mineral in the rock which had come from the surface of the Last Chance but that rock from the Johnson John-son cut on the surface of the Tyler carried silver Mr S M Barrs tertimony was in lide with thatof Gibbons F C Loring civil engineer testified substantially sub-stantially as the others as to tho rock in the surface in the Last Chance and pointed out several discrepancies in defendants maps VV B Honeyman manager of the Tyler Mining company testified ho had triad repeatedly re-peatedly for four years to get into the Last Chance mine but was always refused admittance ad-mittance Much argument was had over the terms of settlement of the adverse suit and the legal battle ivaxed warm The issue is-sue of the matter concerning the judgment j i roll was again taken up and Beatty tools I up the question under advisement It ii J j thought argument before the jury will lit I reached Monday j TODAY SIX MEN CONVICTED OF BUTOLABT in Bingbam county together with Tex convicted of murder in the second degree for killing Dutch John in Bingham county were brought here and lodged in the pen Tex got the full sentence of law twenty five years There are now ninetytwo prisoners in Boise penitentiary more than ever before in its history Laboring men here have another cause ot grievance against Hobsan Wilkorson sawer contractors If they discharge any man for any cause they rnaao him wait till the 10th of the month before paying him or discount his wages 10 per cent if paid at the time of his discharge The labor organization hero is taking the matter up and will see if anything can bo done to stop such work John Madden and his wife arrested sometime some-time ago at Lewiston Idaho for selling liquor to the Indians were brought into the United Statet court today and arraigned ar-raigned They were given till Monday to nlosd |
