Show SAVE YOUR REPUTATIONS If there are fair men In the city council THE HERALD appeals to them when the proposition to sell the Fort block comes up this evening to show themselves Every member of the council no matter what his politics knows that if the proposition to dispose of the square were left to the landed taxpayers of the city the majority against the sale would be as ten to one Every member who knows enough of law and popular rights to entitle him to a seat in the body also knows that the council has no legal power to sell the square the title to which is inalienably in the citizens of Salt Lake l Tho legal adviser of the corporation the gentleman who is paid i from the public fund toprevent the council I in its ignorance of law from doing wrong In just such matters has officially advised that the block cannot be sold < and has warned against its attempted sale saying that a good title cannot be given THE HERALD appeals to the fairminded men in the council to have the courage to do right in spite of the clamor of a handful I of temporary boomers whose sole interest In the city is the nimble dollar which they hope to win before moving on We ask the councilmen to respect the wishes of the people peo-ple who have made this city the pleasant abiding place that it is We ask them to look beyond the year or two during which the disposal of this valuable tract is expected ex-pected to stimulate transactions in real estate es-tate and consider what the alienation of the block will mean to Salt Lake for all time Tho injury will beIrreparable The wrong can never be made right Money will not cure the eviL We warn the councilmen that If they value the respect and esteem of their fellow fel-low citizens they must not vote to sell the Fort square for that act would never be forgiven by the men women and children whose homes are here The people may not charge bribery and corruption but they will through their lives look upon the councilmen as officials who betrayed their trust and showed themselves to be enemies to the community which placed them in temporary power |
