Show fcDJIUNDS TRUE TO HIMSELF Old CASSITJS still said MAKE ANTHONY on listening to one of CAIUS CASSIUS characteristic char-acteristic speeohes Old JEROME still we may say after reading the remarks of Senator EDMONDS in our Sunday dispatches in answer to the observations of Senator REAGAN on tho injustice of appointing the governor and secretary of this territory and the Utah commission to redistrict the territory terri-tory and reapportion the representation for our next legislature Senator REAGAN insisted that of right and in justice the work ought to be left to the territorial legislature but Old JEROME who has taken all legislation legis-lation affecting Utah under his gracious wing was on his feet to explain that in 1SS6 after full investigation by committees of both houses and full consideration and debate de-bate Congress with the approval of the President determined that the public interests involving Christianity and morality and so on Involving Involv-ing opposition to the rule of any priesthood in any community of this country determined that the legislature of Utah should not be permitted to keep its Mormon hierarchy in power by its own appointments ap-pointments which in the estimation of the Senator were exceedingly bad and unjust Congress then reapportioned and provided pro-vided for exactly what should be done continued the Senator Now a new census cen-sus having been made it is proposed for the same reasons and the same public policy of justice and opposition to any governing political priesthood that a body authorized and created under the laws of the United States in that territory and not its legislature legis-lature shall make this re apportionment and that is the whole of the story But these remarks of Old JEROMES do not alter the fact that the giving of this power to redistrict the territory and apportion ap-portion representation in the hands of the governor secretary and Utah commission in the first instance was unjust unusual and unAmerican And respecting that which was wrong to begin with does not sanctify it and make it right There was no real cause to justify the departure from what is usual in such matters in the first place there is nothing to justify it now A man who gets up in the Senate chamber of tha American Congress and avers that depriving the legislature of Utah of the right regulate the election affairs of this territory including tho redistricting of it and the apportionment of representation involves not only the public interest of the nation but also Christianity and morality writes himself down an ass Christianity and the morality of the American nation must be powerful weak if it can be affected by a territorial legislature redistricting redis-tricting the territory in which it operates or reapportioning its representation I The remarks of Mr EDMUNDS about opposing ua governingpolitical priesthood are as ouch out of place now as they were when first uttered m 18S6 and only furnish fur-nish a paltry excuse for the act of injustice injus-tice and oppression There is not and has not been any governing political priesthood priest-hood in Utah to be kept in power by the legislature of this territory That is the idle coinage of the Vermont Senators brain or the misrepresentation of the conspirators con-spirators against Utahs liberty which Old JEROME has accepted and rolled under his tongue as a sweet morsel The majority of Utahs people have been Mormons Mor-mons Her leading and most trusted citizens citi-zens have been of that faith They have been guilty of voting and some of the leadIng lead-Ing men have been elected to positions of trust and honor In early days of the territory ter-ritory thero were none others to elect and Ivan if there had been there was nothing In a mans being a Mormon which disqualified disquali-fied him from being n faithful and an efficient effi-cient officer That this is true is demonstrated demon-strated from the records of the past in this territory We are at the aefiance of the traducers of the Mormon people to point to any territory that now is or ever has been where the local government has been conducted with more I economy uniform impartiality or wneru life property or the liberty of the individual indi-vidual have been more secure than in this same abused Utah But because the Mormon Mor-mon people have not abdicated their liberties liber-ties or given up their franchise at the bidding bid-ding of their political opponents but have continued to vote as their judgment directed di-rected and have elected men in whom they have had confidence the stigma of supporting sup-porting a political governing priesthood has been fastened upon them by the lying tongue of malicious slander and now grave and reverend Senators In f the Senate chamber repeat these childish fables and profess a belief in the political piety of carpetbag officials in this territory rolling up the whites of their eyes at the horrible iniquity of the Morm ons whose chief crime is that they persist in voting for 4 I their friends Surely Old JEROME has that sort of charity which believeth all thinJs |
