BEOS ION WORKS No 149 West North Temple IT WAS A SUCCESS First Annual Gathering of the Cambrian Society A Glorious Time had by the Large Gather I lug at Clayton Hal The Exercises I The Cambrian society has made a record of which i should be proud The celebration of St Davids day ii I may be said without fear of contradiction Was one of the most successful events in the history of the territory I LUO uour announced for me opening exercises the hall was packed full of Welshmen Welsh-men and women and those of Welsh descent de-scent President Bynon made the address of welcome ana Men of Harlech the Welsh national air was sung by Prof Evan Stephens and company Governor Thomas made the opening address ad-dress and he was followed by several musical and other features President Bynons address on The Welsh in Amer lea was an able effort and he treated the subject in an exhaustive and in telligent manner closing his remarks as follows What the carnival is to the German a Ger-man the Fourth of July to the American St Patricks day to the son of Americanhol Eisteddfod on St Davids day is to the son of Cambria During these festivals in olden times the bards held high carnival in literary historical and musical contests This celebration has come down to us from the old bards who for along time in early history exercised great influence in Wales So great indeed that they were not ques tioned even by the king being presumabiy inspired and hence sacred As we con template the history of our country the I United States meager indeed do we find the credit given to the Welsh people pro portionate t the part they have I taken both in the establish men as well a the perpetuation of this the greatest and best government on earth Modest are my countrymen in that they are willing to work and achieve re nown and to credit it to the benefit of their adopted country A Welshman will ponder wi long with tears of affection welling up in his patriotic heart at the sight of the name I dearest of all to him and forever to be inseparable in-separable in his loyal affection Cambria I and Columbia being assured by those two I names that he will forever be protected in the wearing of his leek by the magnificent folds of the starspangled banner TiE EVENING SESSION At 815 last evening Major Bynon made I an apology for the lateness of the hour and announced that Mr Roberts would sing America aud that the chorus would be sung by the audience Mr Roberts has a good voice but his accent is not quite cor rect and he was consequently not one of r the features o Governor Thomas arose and said that he had been appointed to preside over the presentation pre-sentation of the bardic chair and that Mr I William 1ST Williams would make the pre sentation speech Mr Williams said he was pleased as a Welshman to stand before that audience Ho left Wales when a more child but he has always been proud of the Welsh and has never been ashamed to ac knowledge that he a a Welsh man He had met but few Welshmen who have been ashamed of their nativity and said that was a proof that the Welsh are the best people on the face of the earth The ancient Britons were the most learned people in their time I has some times been said that the Welsh could trace their ancestry back to Adam This trac not credit but thought they can trace it back to Noah He gave a brief history of the first of the tribe and of the settlement of England They improved until when Caisar conquered Great Britian they ex celled the Romans in learning The Welsh had many bards in the nation They were always treated with respect and on the national feast day were presented with valuable gifts As a contin uation of this custom a chair was to be pre sented to Mr Bynon president the Utah Cambrian association as a bard The speech of acceptance was made in Welsh by Mr John Davis of Provo Mr Bynon said he was not a bard but was glad that he stood as a representative of the association His mother was Welsh and he was Welsh at heart He was also an American citizen Governor Thomas had said he regretted he could not sing a sos ng but ho is like Artemus Wardalways so-s when he sings and so is his audience He was talking with President Hayes and some Welshmen one day President Hayes In tho course of the conversation said There is a Welsh settlement in my county and that settlement sends out settement ou more business men than any other in the county A L Williams made a speech in which he complimented the Welsh present on being Welsh Ho gave them some good compliments good Next was a duet by Messrs Jones and Hughes Miss Gwendoen Lewis rendered very well an overture on the organ and was encored Mr Ellas Morris made a short speech Mrs Lizzie ThomasEdward was in good voice and her rendition of a ballad was enjoyed Henry Gardner sang a selection very well The recitation St Davids Day by Miss Pearl Evans was very good good considering her youth Mrs Agnes Olsen Thomas sang a selection in her usual style Mr David Jones gave The Little Beggar style Girl The baritone solo by Moroni Thomas was one of the best features of tho evening The glee of Prof Stephens and company brought forth storms of applause Some very fine harp music was given by Messrs W L Jones and D Jeremy Nearly all the pieces were encored and gener good nature prevailed The speeches which were made in Welsh could not be gotten and much was missed as the Welsh speakers said many witty things during the evening A SURE CORE FOE PILES Itching Piles are known by moisture like perspiration causing
