Includes 230 49 era who crossed the plains during the mad craze that followed the discovery of gOldin California The members of the society not striking It rich returned to New England to reenter re-enter the trades and professions they had vacated va-cated and began the battle of life over again and without a dollar of California gold To commemorate their privations and hardships together with the romances of their adventures they organized two years ago the society of California Pioneers of New England with headquarters at Boston where they hold monthly meetings Captain VilnmH Thomas is president and exCongressman B F Whltte more is the associations secretary To revisit the mining camps they had de sorted the party chartered a special train made up of seven Pullman sleepers two dining cars one baggage car and a combination smoker with bath rooms and shaving saloon This Is the heaviest train that ever crossed the continent nent and the party experienced many delays hi climbing the mountains They were received all along the line with a perfect ovation the governors of California ana New Mexico greet geet ing them with unusual civilities At San Bernardino a sad accident occurred which cast a gloom over the spirits of the party General Chapln the hero of the Black Hawk war had just concluded a response to a speech of welcome a 1 the opera house when he fell saddles and were finally driven to consume the flesh of their own dead Out of eightyone forty died of starvation The life of the New Englanders is Hon B F Whittemore who represented a Massachusetts
