Show An Artists Peculiar Position Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORE May 8 Nathan Arnow an artist of considerable repute who lives and has an office in East Seventysecond street Is in avery a-very peculiar predicament Two women claim Mr Arnow as their husband One of these avers that he married her under the name of Arthur Norton nine years ago and claims she was married to him in 1S81 in this city The al leged wife No 1 arrived hero last Friday After consulting with a lawyer she determined to have the artist arrested Accompanied by an officer with a warrant Mrs Norton went to Ar nows house I can easily Identify him said left hand where he was bitten by a pcny and a ump on the back of his head where he was hit with a stone when a boy The officer went In alone and found the artist at work and after several minutes conversation said to Arnow Ill bring my wife In and see what she says The officer went out closing the door after him He returned with Mrs Norton Only let me hear his voice she said nervously and I can ell whether or not it is he The policeman knocked on the door and a mans voice responded Come In Thats he cried Mrs Norton excitedly Thats my husband The pair entered and Mrs Norton immediately recognized Arnow as her husband She grabbed at his left hand and held it up triumphantly There do you see the scar Then sho mealier hands rapidly through theas rtonished artists hair She found the lump on hisTlead and hysterically cried Its he Im sure now Arrest him officer When the officer told the artist he had a warrant war-rant for his arrest Arnow was dumbfounded and ejaculated Why I never saw the woman before What does she want But neverthe less the officer placed him under arrest and took him to court Before the judge Mrs Norton said Arnow had a barber shop in Cincinnati where she married him nine years ago The boy whom she brought with her is the exact likeness of Arnow Arnow said ho got the scar on his hand from having it jammed in a door and had not been in Cincinnati since 1S64 when ho only passed through the city He said he had been an artist ar-tist in this city for the past ten or twelve years and could prove it Judge Murray paroled him until Saturday when Arnow must prove that he Is Arnow the artist and not Norton the bar her In corroboration of her husbands statements Mrs Arnow de facto told a reporter she had lived with her husband eight years that he had lived with her relatives two years before she married him and that before he came to board at her house she had known bun sometime She said that he had had a studio in the Beadle house for five years and the Cooper union three years before that Mrs Norton has letters from herhusband and she will try to match the handwriting hand-writing with that of Arnow Sho thinks it very peculiar that Arnow should bear two marks which were on her husband although suck things might happen Another suspicious coincident circumstance died by Mrs Nortons friends Is the fact that the name Arthur Norton if turned around and twisted just n trifle could be easily changed to Nathan Arnow Mrs Norton has a little money and she Intends to spend every cent in trying to prove that Arnow Is her husband Interesting Interest-ing revelations are promised |
